The Best Zoo In The World!

The only Ben & Jerry's outlet in Singapore is located at the entrance of the Singapore Zoo. What better way to start off a day at the Zoo than with a scoop of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream? :)

The Singapore Zoo is undoubtedly one of the best zoos in the world. It's nice to see the animals roaming freely in their seemingly open enclosures. Don't worry, you're not in any danger - there are moats, they're just very well hidden. Try to catch as many shows and feeding times as you can. My personal favourite is the polar bear.

The Zoo is open from 8:30am to 6:00pm. Entrance fee is $14.

Allikat with a snake at night safari

Situated next to Singapore Zoo about half an hour from the city, Night Safari is the worlds only nocturnal wildlife park. Covering an area of about 40 hectares, over 130 nocturnal species can be seen going about their nightly business as you sit aboard speacial open trams.

There are several walking trails that you can take to explore the park - the Fishing Cats trail, the Forest giants trail or the Leopard trail. a 'Creatures of the Night' show is performed at different times of the evening, and you can have your photo taken with an exotic creature - maybe a snake or a serval cat - for a donation to a wildlife charity.

Speaking of photographs, take a tripod if you want to take pictures - flash photography is strictly forbidden so as not to disturb the animals, and you don't want to upset a white rhino now, do you?!

It's a really unusual way to watch animals, seeing them in a natural setting at night - a great experience.

There are several food outlets, ranging from a burger bar (BongoBurgers!) to a more formal restaurant, and if you fancy taking a fluffy Malayan Tiger home as a souvenier (a toy one, not the real thing) there is also a gift shop.

Beware of the crowds however - Night Safari is one of Singapores most popular attractions, for tourists and locals alike, so it can be very busy, especially at weekends or at holiday periods.

For the Animal Lovers or a Great Family Outing

The Singapore Zoo is one of my favourite places to take my daughter. The tram ride and animal shows are great fun.

Being an animal lover myself, the variety of animals and the natural surroundings that the animals are housed in as well as the information provided on the animals make for a good educational experience.

Have breakfast with Ah meng (The Orang Hutan)

The Orang Hutan

Tourist or local like can have breakfast with our famous Orang Hutan - Ah Meng & family. However, you might want to call first as sometimes, if the orang hutan are not well, breakfast is cancelled. It's not that expensive but it is worth to do while in Singapore!

Kids will be able to have fun and touch animals at the Children Zoo. They even have a small swimming pool for children to cool off... feed the goats, horses, rabbits, etc.. Its a touch and learn concept at the Children Zoo.

Mummies & daddies.. expect to spent 1 day of you are bringing your children to the zoo and to discover every coner of the zoo.

Another new item you should not miss, is the elephant show. Adults & kids would love it. Then you can ride on the elephants... be early or you will miss out on the animal rides.

My advice - walk and not take the tram ..well, unless you are not well! There are resting places and shelter in case it rains. enjoy the atmosphere of rain forest at the zoo.

Lots of exotic animals in enclosures which are as close to their natural habitats as possible. A rather humane zoo, compared to some awful ones I've seen; as much as it can get for keeping animals in captivity I suppose.

Has rare animals like pandas from China or golden monkeys (from ?) on "exchange".. haha!

Lush greenery, good for a stroll anyway.

As a lover of animals this was one place which was high on my list. I also came here on a business trip so to speak, to gather information for Kuala Gandah on the way in which the elephants live and how they are treated.

As for the zoo itself, its exhibits are some of the most humane i have seen in a zoo, with no fences per say, but moats instead making the habitats more natural. Something many other zoos need to learn about!

Going to Night Safari / Zoo by MRT & Bus

Night Safari

Singapore's Night Safari is the first wildlife park in the world that is built and dedicated for visits at night.

Situated within 40 hectares of lush secondary forest, Night Safari prides itself on re-creating the natural environment for the nocturnal animals it shows, and offering its visitors the unique experience of exploring wildlife in a tropical jungle at night.

Through the use of subtle lighting technique, visitors are able to view over 1,000 nocturnal animals of 100 species in vast naturalistic habitats.

With the Night Safari being so special, it is a top attraction for visitors from all over the world. And because of this, I often get asked on how do one get to Night Safari. With this in mind, I have prepared a travelogue decided to this and you will be able to find it under my Singapore page, or by clicking on the link provided below.

I hope the guide is useful and I wish you a pleasant trip to Night Safari! :-)

Creatures of the Night Show

Reticulated Python

The night safari is one of the best things you can do in Singapore. One activity that is definitely worthwhile is the `Creatures of the Night Show`. It`s part entertainment, part information with a shocking twist at the end (if you want to be surprised instead, don`t read the rest of this tip;-)

In the show you can witness the jumping ability of pumas and the power and vision of owls among others in a series of neat interactive demonstrations. Towards the end of the presentation, a 20 foot python is drawn from the unsuspecting audience (in a long trunk under the seats). This results in very loud screaming, panic or laughter, depending on how you feel about snakes (for those that want to know, it`s about ten rows back, just to the left of the center if you`re facing the ampitheatre).

If you stay after the show, the friendly staff will let you hold some of the animals in the show (The best time to go is after the last show in my opinion, it is far less rushed....) .

It runs at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm daily an lasts just under an hour.

pygmy hippos playing

The Singapore Zoo is one of the better zoos. The animals aren't behind big bars-but are held back by natural barriers. Some animals (monkeys, birds) run wild through the zoo-which is quite interesting.

The highlights include the Orang Utan, hamadryas baboons, elephants and my favorite, pygmy hippos. They are much smaller than the other hippos.

The zoo has a breakfast and afternoon tea-which their orang utan and snake visits. You can have your picture taken with them.
