Sentosa Island, Singapore
We went across for the morning, and it was interesting enough. There is heaps to do, but everything is expensive to the point where I decided to put it in the tourist traps section.
Bring plenty of money if you want to visit!
I last visited Sentosa Island about 10 years ago. One Singaporean suggested skipping a visit here. I agree if you are short of time. You might go if you are interested in a beach or want to see a larger Merlion than the one near the Fullerton Hotel and Esplanade.
If you are staying in Singapore for a long time, then consider visiting Sentosa Island.
As you queue up to buy entry tickrts to the island, you will be offered a lot of 'package' deals which include bus rides and guides. Let me tell you that there are free buses available in the entire island and it is best explored at your own pace rather than be herded around by guides.
Fun Alternatives: Just buy the entry ticket, and as you go to Underwater world you can buy youself a ticket the Butterfly park is either free or included in Undewater world ticket. The Dolphin show is free. The free buses are available every 10mts or so.
Sentosa Island is very artificial. It is a kind of theme park island hosting aqariums, cinemas etc, so it is probably more suitable for childern.
Unique Suggestions: However the horizontal gondola ride from the mainland to the island is quite fascinating.
Fun Alternatives: If I go to Singapore again, I would rather opt for the zoo. It is the only night zoo in the world.
One of the attractions on Sentosa Island is the Merlion%. I forced my buddy to join me, because I wanted to see the view from up there. But it is not a tower, where you can just take an elavator. Instead, you have to make a crappy historical tour about Singapore and at the end you will get a crappy souvenier.
Unique Suggestions: The view is not bad, but nothing in comparison with the rlsberg Sky Tower.
Fun Alternatives: Skip the Merlion% and go up the Carlsberg Sky Tower.
The cable car to Sentosa is more a rip off than anything else. The view is not good, there is no reason why you should take it. In addition to that the qeue was so long at 10:30 in the morning that we had to wait more than an hour!
Sentosa Island contains many different exhibits but they virtually all not worth the cost of admission. This is particularly true for the Tourist with only a few days in the city. The beaches are not particularly attractive, the tourist attractions are nothing special, and the monorail is crowded.
Fort Siloso, ontime site of the guns that protected Singapore Harbour, is interesting but not worth the time to get there and back if that is the only stop you are making on the island.
Unique Suggestions: If you are going take the Cable Car - the view is attractive. Don't pay extra for the glass car, the difference in the view is not that great.
On the island go to Fort Siloso; this provides the visitor with an interesting view of life in a colonial military base. The Aquarium is also pretty good (on par with Melbourne)
Fun Alternatives: If you are interested in animals I strongly suggest the night Zoo and a visit to the Bird Park. Both are far more interesting. As for history, try the Battle Box and the Asian Civilisation museum.
