    Pickpocketing syndicate in Bugis Junction

Recently, there has been a spate of pickpocketing in Bugis Junction carried out by a Vietnamese syndicate. Last week, 3 Vietnamese women on tourist passes were arrested for stealing a cellphone from the backpack of a shopper.

Be very careful when you shop at Bugis Junction. Always have your bags and backpack in front of you. Singapore may be a safe place with low crime but it does not mean no crime.

    Channelnewsasia July 12, 2009:
SINGAPORE: Police arrested three Vietnamese women for stealing from a female shopper at a shopping mall along Victoria Street on Saturday evening.

At about 5pm, officers from Central Police Division were performing routine anti-crime patrols at the mall when they spotted the three suspects, aged between 22 and 39, following closely behind the female shopper. This aroused the suspicion of the officers.

One of the suspects was spotted reaching into the shopper's backpack while shielding her hand with a jacket. The three suspects then hurriedly walked away, but were swiftly apprehended by the officers.

A handphone, belonging to the female shopper, was recovered from the suspects' possession. Another handphone and a portable music player, believed to be stolen items, were also recovered from the suspects.

All three suspects will be charged on Monday and if found guilty of theft, will face a fine and up to three years in jail.

Acting Commander of Central Police Division, Superintendent Lee Ping Yue, reminds members of the public to take care of their personal belongings at all times, especially in crowded places, and to be wary of strangers who follow them too closely.

CHina town can get very crowded during festival.. especially chinese festival like chinese new year, moon cake festival etc.

Look for your belongings because people can walk shoulder by shoulder. As usual, the best time for pick-pocketer.

Practise safety measures, raise your alertness when you are walking in the crowd.. Although Singapore is recognise for its safety, but still there is petty crime here and there, especially in crowded places, so make sure you dont create the chance for them.

Other than China Town, pickpocketing cases are always heard in Bugis as well.

Watchout for pickpocket should you be wandering around at Little india. As the district is full of immigrants rather than locals so watch out for your belongings & those extra hands out to squeeze you (female travellers especially)
