Tanglin Halt is one of the few places in Singapore where you can still see the old styled coffee shops like the ones shown in the photographs. These are places where locals love to hang-out and try their favourite local food. The food at these coffee shops are very cheap (less than US$4 per meal) and most of the locals can communicate in English (English are also written on the signboards).

The Biopolis is a modern bio-medical hub in Singapore which I currently work in. The tall buildings here are integrated together by sky bridges and form the shape of a DNA. There are also many cafes, food court and other eateries and pubs here, as well as a big fish pond and park. It is very easy to get to Biopolis, simply take the MRT sub-way and alight at Buona Vista station. Cross the overhead bridge and Biopolis is just behind the prominent Ministry of Education building. The views of the surrounding areas from the Biopolis buildings are fantastic.

The Portsdown Road area in Singapore is famous for its beautiful and huge British colonial residential houses which are now rented for expatriates to stay. This place also has huge fields and greenery is all over. It is a must visit if you are interested to experience something different in Singapore.

The 2 storey shophouses at Tanglin Halt are among some of the oldest shophouses in Singapore. Everyday, you will see many local people coming here to buy groceries and do other daily staff. This is a good place to have a first hand experience of the local Singapore culture.

The Housing Development Board (HDB) residential flats are among some of the oldest flats in Singapore, and coming here is like going back to Singapore many years ago. More photos of these flats are at the travelogue section of this VT page. By the way, HDB is a government linked statutory board in Singapore which builds residential flats in Singapore since many years ago, and about 70% of the population in Singapore live in HDB flats (including myself).

The actual Tanglin Halt road is actually a rather narrow road off the main Commonwealth Avenue road. Tanglin Halt road has only one lane on each side. However, it passes through an area of old housing estate (mainly flats) and parks which is very nostalgic because it is like what Singapore was like many years ago.

Like many other places in Singapore, the Tanglin Halt area is filled with trees, greenery and a park located next to the railway line. The park has a jogging/cycling track as well as a playground.
