RAFFLES HOTEL

by Nina-Maarit

Raffles Hotel, built in 1887, is one of the few remaining great 19th century hotels in the world. It was declared a National Monument in 1987 and re-opened after restoration in 1991. Raffles Hotel's Long Bar is where the world-famous Singapore Sling was created by Hainanese bartender Ngiam Tong Boon.

Asian Civilisations Museum

The most important exhibition in this marvelous musem has to be the permanent collection of the Peranakan Legacy which showcases the various embroidery, batik & exquisite silver pieces of the Perankans. For a clearer understanding of the Peranakans, please refer to the "local custom" tip of my page.

Bugis Junction

Shop at BUGIS JUNCTION and SEIYU, one of Japanese major chain, something like Sears in U.S. & Canada. Many food outlets like Delifrance, MacDonalds, Mos Burger & Patara Thai Restaurant can be found here. At the basement, there's a great food court (airconditioned, naturally!) & many varieties of local food can be tried at the average price of US$3 per dishes.

Incentive enough to bring all your credit cards? Yeah, you can buy your luggages here, no problem! My favorite things to buy are all the electronic goods, they are even better priced than in HK! Computers, MP3 players, CD writers, branded goods like Gucci, Cartier, Tiffany, Rolex, etc...

ASIAN CIVILISATIONS MUSEUM: One of the best museums in Singapore! Do not miss this museum if you are interested in the multi-ethnic heritage of the Southeast Asian region. Housed at the old Tao Nan School, it's about 7 mins walk from the Singapore Art Museum from Queens Street. The museum also displays exhibits on both Peranakan & Chinese Culture. The Peranakan Legacy is especially interesting. The display looks at the unique culture forged between the Chinese, Malay & European worlds over 200 years ago.A spectacular showcase of Nonya beadwork, embroidery, jewellery, silverwork, sireh (betel-nut) & ceramics.Other exhibits include Indian treasures, Chinese Calligraphy from the Yeo Khee Lim Collection & (most interesting) the exhibitions of the Textile Friends of Singapore (Sacred Threads: Ceremonial Textiles of Southeast Asia).Open: 12 noon - 6pm (Mon), 9am - 6pm (Tue - Thur, Sat & Sun),...
