Affluent and modern

by Assenczo

Singapore has made a plunge into modernity. It has the premises for that, the money, and has taken good care of it by investing in its modern outlook and infrastructure; apparently there is no expense to be spared when it comes to quality and vision. One might argue that this is somebody else’s vision just purchased by the locals but one can be more lenient considering the result – unique modern architecture proudly shooting to the skies. The new hotel/casino/mall/bridge complex at the Marina bay on reclaimed land is mindboggling set up very much along the lines of the futuristic city of Odaiba in Tokyo. The main composition of three towers capped by a ship-looking roof is something of grandiose symbol of a city with its fortunes firmly based on shipping and trade. Much unlike the phony fairytale symbol of Singapore, the lion-mermaid, it has very convincing outlook and the spot is...

Arab joint

by Assenczo

Arab street is not different from Little India – the same sterile stylization of Arab life with some architectural mix that makes you wonder which part of the Arab world it came from and maybe it is no more than a British variation on oriental theme(mind you China town is not far away in this sense). Oh, I was going to forget there are a couple of mosques around. But for Singapore this does not say much because the usual practice is that temples of different religions end up side by side. The shops are there for you (what else of course) to make you feel immersed in Arab spirit but this is rather imaginary – no smells or sounds evoke Arab way of life.

Indian Quater

by Assenczo

Indian Quarter is actually not much more than a street. The feeling that it might be a quarter is the presence of many South Asian looking people - whether they are Indian is another matter. Shopping is the most you can do here with some occasional food venues supplying restoration of the colon balance if needed. Little India is interesting as a demonstration of what Singapore used to be but the example is rather lame one.

China town in China city

by Assenczo

Visiting China town in what is undeniably a Chinese city is a funny experience. This is one of the examples of how the rush for modernization has been toned down due to the realization that there is value to be sold in the possession of authentic culture. Where the Arab quarter and the Indian one might be considered as a reverence towards the minority cultures there is no explanation why China town exists in China country – this is an oxymoron. But it does because the modernization pace has been fast and furious clearing all in its path, the Chineseness as well. Nowadays this is the only spot, commercialized to the brim of course, that has Chinese motives on a scale bigger than a single building and has the largest Buddhist temple as an extra.

Disney Land in South China Sea

by Assenczo

Sentosa Island is one of the larger islands that are part of the island nation of Singapore named after the largest one of them – namely Singapore. It has been turned into a Disney Land style entertainment venue with some educational options in between the rides. As such, it seems to be that the children are the target audience but they come with their parents inevitably and when the young at heart are included in the census it becomes clear that this joint is for everybody. Even if you do not fit in for any other reason, there is still a good pretext to visit the island since the views from the cable car and from the top of the statue of the lion (the symbol of Singapore) are breathtaking.

Favourites Things to To in Singapore

by walterwu

You could group places together.Universal Studio, Underwater World are on Sentosa Island and near each other.Mandai Zoological Gardens and Night Safari are next to each other. One is daylight operating hours and the other open after dusk. May be very tiring to try both within the same day.If you are heading for the Singapore Flyer, you might want to try out Glutton Place (famous for the best of local food) for either lunch or dinner. There's also a food court with the Singapore Flyer complex that has very nostalgic setting.Orchard Road Shopping, Mandarin Gallery, ION can also be grouped together.Another place that you can cover could be the Snow City which is very near the Science Centre. The Singapore River is one area that attracts alot of interest with the traditional bum boat ride. Clarke Quay along the river offers alot of shops and dining places.Hippo tours take you through the...

Bum Boat Tour

by Saagar

A boat ride on the Singapore River was a nice thing to do. Basically headed downriver by a sightseeing boat and into the inner harbour, then going back up again. Not very adventourous, but both convenient and interesting.Runs 9am to 10 pm daily. Ticket cost about 13 SGD for an adult.Bought a ticket at the Clarke Quay Jetty and went straight aboard, had a nice trip as it got dark and all the lights came on. Completed the evening by a river side restaurant upon returning. Recommended as a low-intensity-low-treshold activity.

Follow in the footsteps of Marilyn Monroe and enjoy a Singapore Sling at the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. There are lots of tourists there and the drink is quite expensive, but it's worth it! It's a tasty drink and the hotel is really beatiful.

Sultan Mosque

by Willettsworld

We stayed near to this mosque at the ABC Backpackers Hostel (see my accommodation tip). The Sultan Mosque is one of the most important mosques in Singapore and is located in the Arab Street area within the Kampong Glam district of Singapore. The history of mosque dates back to the time when Singapore was ceded to the British in 1819, and the island's chief, Temenggong Abdul Rahman, and the ruler, Sultan Hussain Shah of Johor, acquired a small fortune in exchange of handing over Singapore. Stamford Raffles granted the Temenggong and the Sultan an annual stipend, and the use of Kampong Glam as their residence. Their followers came to live in Kampung Glam from the Riau Islands, Malacca and Sumatra. The mosque was built by Sultan Hussain as a place of worship for his followers and was built next to his palace. Construction was carried out between 1824 and 1826, and funds came from the East...

Bugis Street - For Those who Love Markets

by Mikebb

All the guide books tell you to visit Bugis Street and we visited twice. At night it is something to see, colourful lights everywhere, stalls everywhere selling everything you may think of.Very crowded at night but a real good time and easy to get to as it has a MRT station nearby. We also visited during day time on our way to Sim Lim Tower, the electronics, camera and computer building with hundreds of retailers. Daytime was good but did not match the evening atmosphere.
