Theatre on the Bay

by kyoub

We were lucky to be in Singapore the day of the grand opening of the Esplanade, Threatre on The Bay. It is a durien shaped building used for the preforming arts. We had a rigside seat, from our hotel room balcony. It is worth seeing while you are in Singapore.

by kyoub

Chinatown is packed with people shopping for knick-knacks, clothing, and edibles. There are vendors lining the streets that are eager to sell you something. You can also find some shops that have specialists in herbal medicine. The Sri Mariamman Temple is located here also. This Indian Hindu temple was built in 1843Sri Marimman is a goddess credited with the power to cure epidemic diseases.

Chinatown

by Flipboy

Chinatown is deffinately a wonderous place to visit. Lots of yummy local foods and plenty of tourist crap. Walk down Pagoda St. and you can see a sea of tourists, which make you think you are in chinatown in a western country ;op

Take a bumboat ride on the river

by kyoub

A "cool" thing to do of an evening is go down to river and take a ride on a bumboat. As the boat goes along you get a view of people eating in the riverside restaurants, see the financial buildings, and some nice hotels. Good opportunity to take some photos. You can get off near the restaurants so you won't have so far to walk if you are staying around for awhile..

Orchid gardens

by Chris_Bore

On Sentosa Island are orchid gardens. They are not large, but the orchids displays are really nice. Amazing (for an English gardener) to see orchids used as bedding plants. It is free to go in, and pleasantly laid out as a garden. Near by are the 'magical fountains' that do displays to music each evening, so you could combine a visit. The orchid gardens are an easy walk from the ferry terminal and cable car station if you are fot and can cope with the heat.

Southernmost point of Asia

by Chris_Bore

On Sentosa Island, the south beach, you can cross a rope bridge to a little island that is the southernmost point of Asia. The walk along the beach is nice, and the little island has twin observation towers. The rationale for calling this the southernmost point of Asia is, that the little island is linked to Sentosa Island by a bridge: and Sentosa is linked to Asia by a bridge, so the little island is linked to continental Asia. But the main thing is it is a nice walk, with a little interest to it as well.

A walking tour of history

by maria_hz

Singapore being fairly compacted, offers great possibilities for walking tours in the city centre. One walking tour worth making is a walk around the Civic district which displays historical sites. Start at Bras Basah, walking past the exquisite Singapore Art Museum building, which used to house the Singaporean Parliament. Continue down the same street, to that icon of luxury accommodation; the Raffles Hotel. If you like, go for a Satay and a Singapore Sling (not for kids, contains alcohol). Then walk down toward the durian-shaped theatre complex, the Esplanade by the seafront. On your right side, you can see the City Hall and Supreme Court along St Andrews Road. If you continue south over Singapore River, you can catch a glimpse of the symbol of the Lion City, the Merlion. Cross at the Fullerton Bridge to the northwest, and steer towards Empress Place, where Sir Raffles himself presides...

Sentosa island -- developed greenery

by maria_hz

Singapore being small and confined to a few islands, they are determined to make the most of the space they have. Sentosa island is south of Singapore island and is being developed into a tropical island resorts the likes of other R&R resorts in Asia, with five star beach resorts, public beaches and other sights and attractions intended to please all members of family, regardless of age. There are a number of restaurants, gift shops, and beaches. There are also various nature-related attractions such as gardens, parks, the Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom and the Underwater world.Of all the attractions, we chose the Underwater world (including a show with pink dolphins, adorable!) and had a look around some beaches and the allegedly southernmost point on the Asian continent. The Underwater world was fun, as they had giant turtles in a pool outside, a shallow pool with fish you could...

Middle-Eastern atmosphere in Kampong Glam

by maria_hz

The ethnic district around Arab Street gives you a hint of the Mid-East right in Singapore. This is where the Muslims settled in Singapore, and to attest to this, here you will also find Singapore's biggest mosque, the Sultan Mosque. There are wonderful fabrics, mats and clothes to be had, not to mention the fare. On Bussorah Street, with the beautiful Sultan Mosque towering at the Western end, you can shop batik and other souvenirs. Also check out Kampong Glam café and try their lime iced tea. We found a nice relaxed bar also on this street, so this seems to be the place to go for a quiet drink in a restful atmosphere, either in between shopping or then just to chill.
