Chinatown

by maria_hz

Though 77% of Singapore's population is of Chinese descent, there is a Chinatown in Singapore. This is the area where the Chinese settled, and you can still imagine what it must have looked like just a hundred years ago. Here you can find Chinese restaurants, tea shops, pharmacies selling herbs used in Traditional Chinese medicine, as well as a lot of Chinese products (silk, wooden, anything). For the street bazaar feel, go to Pagoda Street. On Pagoda Street you will also find the Chinese heritage centre. There is also a night market and a food street to be tried out.The stuff you will find in the small shops and stalls are the same you will find in China itself, and you can stock up on silk, jade, wooden items and feng shui paraphernalia.

Sultan Mosque

by zafilm

The Sultan mosque, regarded by many as Singapore's unofficial "state mosque" (masjid Negara,) was once an integral part of Sultan Hussain Shah's royal precinct or Kota Raja. Declared a preserved historical building in 1975, it is a principal place of worship for Muslims and attracts a considerable number of tourists as well as local students on National Education tours. The Malay Heritage Centre or Taman Warisan was once the residence of the Sultan of Singapore. it features the historical and socio-cultural development of the Malay community and showcases its arts, culture and artefacts. It aspires to be the focal point of Malay Heritage and the venue for Malay traditional performances and ceremonies.Open Daily. (Pls open your shoes before entering the Mosque)

The Old Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Chapel

by zafilm

The convent was first set up with the intention of providing education for girls. In 1854, poor and disabled girls were sent there. Babies were abandoned at the Convent gates. As such, the convent evolved to become the Convent Orphanage and Home for Abandoned Babies. The gate where babies were abandoned was referred to as The Gate of Hope. We can still see it today. It is located within the current premises of CHIJMES. To attempt to keep readers in suspense, I shall not disclose the exact location. The challenge is for you to find its exact current location.Representing a harmonious resolution between the battling styles of Gothic and classical, CHIJMES has elegantly illustrated the adaptation of European architecture to the tropics. In 2003, UNESCO awarded CHIJMES a merit award for the excellent restoration work it had undertaken.

Sri Perumal Temple

by zafilm

Every year, the drama of Thaipusam unfolds in this temple located in Little India.at Many components of a traditional temple still remain despite it being rebuilt several times since its establishment in 1855.This large complex, dedicated to Vishnu, dates from 1855 but the 20m-tall gopuram is a relatively recent addition, rebuilt in 1966 at a cost of S$300,000. Inside the temple you will find a statue of Perumal, or Vishnu, his consorts Lakshmi and Andal, and his bird-mount, Garuda. This temple is the starting point for devotees who make the walk to the Chettiar Hindu Temple during the Thaipusam festival.

Sri Mariamman Temple

by zafilm

The original temple was built out of wood and attap by 1827 and the original brick bones of the present building were built around 1843.Craftsmen were brought over from India to build this oldest and most important of Singapore's Hindu religious buildings. Its elaborate tower-like gopuram has been a landmark to generations of Hindu worshippers and residents in Chinatown.Open daily except hindu ceremony. ( Pls open your shoes before entering the temple)

Local Food

by zafilm

Talk about food and you're bound to get every Singaporean excited!.It's not surprising that Singaporeans are such food-lovers. A cosmopolitan city like ours is a melting pot of different cuisines from around the world. We've got the best Chinese, Malay, Indian, European and fusion foods. The burst of flavours is guaranteed to tingle your taste buds. With so much to choose from and at relatively low prices, it's no wonder Singaporeans are such picky-eaters too.But not for me.....haha

Atmospheric podcast tour of Singapore

by puching

Check out the iGuide to Singapore, it is a really well produced podcast guide to the historic colonial centre of Singapore. http://www.iguides.bizIt has great background music, and tons of character voices, really beats the usual Singlish accent of someone who is dragging you and a dozen others around the city at breakneck speed. And you can stop, start, and re-do a spot at your convenience.Raffles himself makes a guest apperance, as do Sang nila Utama, the Malay king who started the place a thousand years ago, and the ghost of Sir Robert Fullerton (who? well listen and find out!)

Experience India, in Singapore

by maria_hz

Singapore has a sizeable Indian minority and that has left its mark on the architecture and life of Singapore. To get a feel of the Indian heartbeat, a taste of Indian cuisine or why not a look around the Indian market, head to Little India! The first floor of the Tekka market by Sungei Road stocks sarees, Indian jewellery and lots of other things. Downstairs there is a food court where you can have local fare and buy fruit too. Just outside, towards Sungei Road, you can buy proper Indian jewellery, or then just admire the handiwork. The shops lining the streets of Little India sell anything Indian; indian food and spices, Indian music, insence and so on.The streets of Little India smell and sound of India, and the piece the resistance; a brightly coloured Hindu temple.
