Esplanade Theatre on the Bay

by iyukase

We visited the Theatre during Mosaic Music Festival which lots of artists from all over the world had their concerts in many halls of the theatre. This Durian-like building is very beautiful at night and also lifely with a lot of Singaporians who love art and music, located on the bay which can see the Merlion on the other side....such a cool place :)

Siloso Beach Sentosa

by canttaketheskyfromme

All tourists go to Sentosa, but they often do the theme park side, and don't tend to see Singapore as having a any beach appeal. Well living in a tropical city and not swimming wouldn't be very nice so Sentosa, a wasteland of former military defences was rebuilt from the rock and trees up to be Singapore's beach. The island has several beaches, and Siloso is one of the better ones with interesting offshore islets built to stop the imported sand being washed away, a few beach bars (expensive - bring your own drink if picnic instead) and a shop selling beach stuffs. There'a lso thoughtfully, some showers, toilets and changing rooms also.So sit back in the warmth, back against a tree and escape the city for a bit. If it weren't for the oil refinery on the horizon and container ships you could almost be in Tioman or Bali, but the food is better and so is the city ;)Note: Visit during the week...

Reverse Bungy

by timotee

Pay about SGD$35 and get strapped to a seat that shoots 60 m into the sky and bounces up and down. Finally the ride stops and you have a view of the SIngapore River and the surrounding buildings from a height. You can have a DVD recording for SGD$15I tried it with my friend togetherAlthough the ride lasted only for 3 minutes, it was quite exciting. I felt as though I was charging into the Singapore river. My friend and I had a nice laugh afterwards. The ride can take up to 3 people at 1 time.

SRI MARIAMMAN TEMPLE

by aussiejen

This temple is the oldest Hindu Temple in Singapore. The present brick building was built in 1862.A few rules must be observed:* All visitors must remove their shoes at the entrance before entering the temple, although you may keep socks on. * Smoking is not allowed.* Do not enter prohibited areas.* Respect the privacy of devotees and do not disturb them at prayer. You are able to walk around the temple grounds and take photos. However, there is a $3 fee to pay for using your camera.Don't forget to pick up a leaflet as you enter, it has lots of info about this fascinating temple.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

by canttaketheskyfromme

The reserve is only small, but has some fantastic wild life and beautiful lush forest. You wont get lost as there is a network of boardwalks throughout with picnic areas, viewing points etc. There is also a beautifully designed entrance building with a small exhibition giving the natural and human history of the area and information on plant and animal life in the reserve, and it's geology, as well as a small shop and the usual toilets and rest area. In the reserve there are the abaondoned greanite quarries, now spectacular lakes and cliffs. It's incredibly beautiful and totally different to the achitypical image of the city. It's free to enter, and if you go on a weekday it's likely to be quiet and serene.

WET MARKET DELICACIES ??

by aussiejen

Glenda (bpacker) very kindly took us on a tour of the wet market in Chinatown. The fruit and veg part was similar to markets we have here in Melbourne, but the fish part was something else!!!!!!!! What an eye opener!!!! I have now seen live frogs in the cages and within a couple of minutes being sold after being killed and de-skinned (is that a word?). It all happens so quickly that you don't have time to feel queasy!!I've also seen what happens to the lung fish!!I must admit I was fascinated by the ladies scraping the flesh off fish with spoons to use for fish balls.Another highlight was seeing Glenda jump very quickly when a fish tried to escape it's fate! It proved very tricky for the stall holder to capture it and return it to the bucket. Thanks again Glenda, it was another memorable experience.

DUCK Tour

by shinobu

This tour is very expensive and very noisy. The huge engine in the back is grinding so loud it drowns out everything. It's very hard to hear the guide, especially if he has a hard-to-understand accent. The tour takes you around the maidan (central open area where the British had their colonial buildings) and then into the river, which is usually a lot of fun, but I was just waiting for it to be over. I love the DUCK tours I did in other places, but I'm afraid I can't really recommend this one.
