The Ethnical towns

by Yasmi

To get a real good idea of the melting pot that Singapore really is, take a stroll through the China Town, the Arabic and Indian squares. I wasn't that impressed by them as I felt that I've seen a lot more impressive ChinaTowns in some other parts of the world.

The Merlion

by Yasmi

Really a tourist trap since it was designed in 1964 as an emble for Singapore. But it has become such an icon of Singapore, that a visitor just has to take a look. Most beautiful during the night lighting. The fish tail symbolises the ancient city of Temasek, before the name was changed to Singapura, the lion head represents the lion spotted by Prince Sang Nila Utama as he rediscovered and renamed Singapore.

Theathres on the Bay

by Yasmi

A huge modern theatre building, that from the outside resembles mostly a huge hedgehog, but from the inside looked quite astonishing. We didn't go see the plays, but a peek of this building is worthwhile if you happen to be in the neibourghood.

Island Cruise

by Yasmi

Singapore is surrounded with beautiful tropical Islands and the easiest way to get a glimpse of them is to take a few hour cruise. The cruises leave from Clifford Pier. Our cruise stopped at Kusu Island, which had an old chinese temple and a small patch of jungle filled with birds. The ride there was a little rough on an 100 year old wooden boat. (or they at least claimed it to be that old) Also got a peak of the Singapore harbour and a some great views of singapore.

Sentosa Island, for a day to relax and have fun

by Yasmi

Sentosa Island is the place where singaporeans go for their day off. Filled with beaches and lots of fun activities like an aquarium and a pink dolphin show. A cable car ride goes to the Island but on the day we went there, it was out of order, so we took a taxi and went by the bridge that connects to the Island. There is a bus service that goes around the Island, and walking through it might get exhausting in the heat. The southermost part of the Asian continent is located on the Island. Recommended for a day off the bustling city.We were at Sentosa Island during the balloon hat festival (yes you got it right!) The festival that is mostly about wearing balloon hats and competing between school classes, about the greatest balloon hat.

Singapore Night Safari

by Yasmi

The Singapore Zoo is world famous, but we decided to go for something a little different. The Night Safari is based on the fact that most animals usually seen in zoos are nocturnal, and not really active during the day. The Night Safari is a different kind of zoo, where you go at sunset. Subtle lighting gives you a chance to see the animals at their most active time. There are trains that go around to show you the area, but you can also step of the train and go by foot. Most of the surrounds are built to look so subtle, that it actually feels like you are walking around in a national park. You also have a chance to encouter bats and flying squirrels by walking in special cages made for them.

National Orchid Garden

by Brian&Sally

Situated within the confines of the Botanical Gardens, the Orchid Gardens are easily the most spectacular part of the whole complex. Although the number of flowers in bloom at any one time will vary according to the time of year, you're assured of dazzling displays of colour no matter what time you visit. Not to be confused with the Mandai orchid garden. There are many fountains, gazebos and other little features scattered around the garden to hold your attention. Of particular note is the Cool Room, which as the name suggests simulates a cold mountain top environment and is also particularly refreshing on a typical humid Singapore day, the Mist House, showing many rare and colourful samples from around the world, and the Bromeliad collection which highlights bromeliads of course.Entry to the Botanical Gardens themselves is free, but the Orchid section is SG$5 (SG$1 concession, children...

Visit Little India

by JoelWillTravel

Little India is a great place to see how one of Singapores many different cultures live. The main road through Little India is Serangoon Road which seems to be where all the action is. Plenty of stalls, shops, restaurants and temples to keep visitors happy. Great area to get a nice cheap Indian meal and do a bit of shopping. Also head down some of the side streets to get a taste of what little India is really like, the Mustafa Centre is here which has all kinds of things on sale from Gold to Electronics. A cool place to visit!

Tip Photo
Chinatown

by lhe

Chinatown has an interesting Chinese name used by locals. It is called "Niu Che Shui", which means "Bullock Carts Water". That originally refers to the early days when there was no water supply in the area, the locals have to rely on the bullock carts to carry fresh water there. Chinatown was the area where the early days Chinese immigrants live. Although modern day Singapore has a large population of Chinese people and most of them no longer live at Chinatown, it is still the best place to experience the Chinese tranditions, especially you go visiting during Chinese new year.
