SENTOSA - MERLION VISIT

by Bonobo2005

On Sentosa Island you may be impressed by the giant appearance of a concrete lion / fish creature. This is called the Merlion and considered reflecting Singapore's identity (an invention of the Tourism Board). Have your picture taken in the nicely gardened environment surrounding it, but don't waste your time and money (SGD 8 / USD 5,20) on this so called attraction. What can you expect here:* A short animated movie about the fable of the Merlion and the origin of the name Singapura;* A complimentary coin of fortune that you can exchange for a little throw away souvenir;* An elevator ride to 37 meter to look around in 360 degrees.* Descend to the mouth of the Merlion for photo taking.Obviously, people tried very hard to make it all look attractive and interesting but the contents and entertainment factor is totally zero. It's hard to imagine anyone will be excited by this attraction and I...

SENTOSA 4D MAGIX

by Bonobo2005

Sentosa proudly presents its 4D cinema that is the first, the largest, the most expensive and the most mindblowing of its kind in all SE Asia. Chairs in this cinema cost about USD 6500 each and have features such as seat vibration, leg tickling (to increase the level of scariness in the spiders and bat scenes), wind blowing, water release (so that you have to dry your 3D glasses) and sound effects. For months now they have a show on about pirates looking for a treasure on an island who encounter a surviver from an earlier attack. All interesting, but who's gonna like it? Adults? likely only very few will enjoy. The story and execution is childish and despite lasting less than 15 minutes, you soon find out that there are actually only about 5 or 6 chair effects that start repeating, and the surprises are over. Especially the chair shaking become soon terribly annoying and keeps you...

Beware the Touters

by keeweechic

Beware especially around the Plaza's, Lucky Plaza especially, for guys selling copy watches. Touting is illegal in Singapore but these guys operate out of back rooms of tailors etc. They walk quietly past you and say ‘copy watch?’. If you are interested, then don’t make a scene and acknowledge interest. I found the touters all very safe and I took many visitors to Singapore there. I have copy watches which are still running perfectly. You can also get copy bags, t’shirts and goodness knows what by now.

Bogus monks and nuns

by simonzex

Beware when you are approached by any one who dressed like a monk or nun and asked you for donations. Do not give them any money. They are fake!! Real monks and nuns in Singapore do not go around "begging" for $. Call the police (tel: 999) if they pester you (this clearly show that they are fake)

dishonest taxi driver

by simonzex

Fret not if you are ripped off by a dishonest taxi driver. You can report them at the Land Transport Authority website at www.lta.gov.sg. Remember to record down the date/time of the incident, taxi number and the name of the driver (shown on the dashboard). Normally, LTA will acknowledge your complain within 3 working days and inform you of their investigation within a month or so. Taxi driver who overcharge their customer face the possibility of having their vocation licence revoked. Take MRT (train service) / bus instead. Singapore has a comprehensive public transport network that never go on strike. Get a free local map from any major shopping centres or airport, then buy a transport guide (only a few bucks), and you can explore the island state. You can also ask the locals for directions.

Sentosa

by Flipboy

When I first arrived to Singapore many people asked if I had gone to Sentosa and then began to chide May for having not taken me yet. Truthfully I had no inclination to go. So, not long after all that a couple of friends were staying at a hotel on the island and invited us to come and hang out poolside with them. This was my chance to have a quick look around the island. All I can say is that most of Sentosa is quite tacky and not really worth the trip. There are some short 'nature' walks that we took which had giant dinosaur bones in the ground, This was quite random and silly. The musical fountain was a pathetic moldy mix of concrete and spitting water and the monorail was the slowest means of transportation I have seen. There are some aquariums and other tourisy stuffs, but in all, its not my kinda gag.The beaches in Sentosa are all fake and have a view of sludge tankers and cargo...

Taxis from Train station

by Aussieben

I arrived at Singapore train station 11 or so at night and was greeted by a "taxi" driver offering a life for 20SGD, approx 12 USD. It was only 1 km away (Little Chinatown). Catch a metered cab, expect to pay no more than 5SGD to get to Chinatown and 12 to India/orchard road.

Sim Lim Square

by aukahkay

Sim Lim Square is a large shopping mall selling digital and IT products. The first two floors sell digital products like digicams, camcorders and MP3 players. No price is displayed on the product and if you do not appear to be local, you could be taken for a ride. The price quoted to you could be 50% higher than that quoted for the same product at Best Denki or Harvey Norman. These shops are usually run by small businessmen, some of whom have dubious sales practices. If you want to buy electronic goods at Sim Lim Square, make sure that you have an intimate knowledge of exactly what you want and what the latest technology is to avoid being conned by cunning salesmen. Know how much the product costs in your home country. Do not buy from the first shop that you enter but compare the prices in different shops. Insist on an international warranty. If the product does not come with an...

SIM LIM SQUARE

by DexterTan

Almost everyone here is trying to rip you off. I seriuosly have no idea why this place is so popular with tourists. Tourists who are about to get ripped off :)This place is promoted as an preferred shopping venue for electical appliances, cameras etc in Singapore. Well, here are the facts... 1. Photographic equipment / Cameras are expensive... out off 5 shops I aksed, only 1 shop tried to sell me the Nikon 18-200mm lens close to the MRSP in USA (i.e USD 700) after light bargaining, so just forget about it. Statistically there is a 80% chance you'll get ripped off.2. Mobile phones are quite dodgy and you can never be sure if some parts (like batteries, ear pieces etc) are originals... some looked like copies to me.3. I think computer hardware are priced quite competitively as prices are advertised openly on shop windows and flyers.4. Visit the SONY shop.... that's probably the only shop...

Sentosa activities

by Tuborg

Sentosa Island has a great beach, and that's it. Steer clear of all other attractions like the Aquarium and the Delfin show, if you've seen anything that's decent anywhere else...it's not really anything here....except expensive. The beach is good....and the cable car trip is OK, if you're heading for Mount Faber, anyways. No known beach alternative (it's pretty good at Sentosa, anyways). For "nature", go to the gardens or the inland swamps instead...
