Newton Hawker Centre

by Ashley_Kwek

This hawker centre is a favourite among visitors. I don't know why. Other than its convenient location, there is not much going for it. The food is pretty overprice and the hawkers can get aggressive when attracting customers. Get a variety of food so that you can at least get a taste of local food. Be adventurous and do not be scared off by stuff you have never tried before. if anything else, you can be assured that the food is clean!. Any hawker centres in the older residential neighbourhoods in Singapore can served as an alternative. Ang Mo Kio Central, Bedok Hawker centre are some examples

This is common sense -- If you don't look or speak like a local, when you buy electronic appliances, computer hardware (or anything that's relatively pricier than the average souvenir) at places where they don't display fixed prices - be wary if the shopowner asks you 'so when are you going back?'. If you must answer, extend the length of your trip for a couple of days/weeks. You will lessen the chance of receiving faulty goods or being overcharged should they think you're staying long enough to find out!

Don't this, Don't that!

by M.E.R.V

There are many DON'Ts in Singapore. Let me list a few:1. Don't spit.2. Don't litter(unless u want to appear on TV)3. Don't bring chewing gum in(it's been banned for god knows how long!)4. Don't smoke in air-conditoned places(cept hotel loobies and some others)5. Don't try smuggling drugs in(the next thing u know ur head's in some rope!) Chew your gum wid ur mouth closed...and Smile always! : )

I often see tourists buying electronic goods or computer products along Orchard such as Lucky Plaza. They can get the same items at a much lower price at the nearby SIM LIM SQUARE [Bugis MRT] or FUNAN CENTRE [City Hall MRT]!

Well, if u intend to go Sentosa [which is a major tourist attraction], do buy or pack drinks n food at the World Trade Centre [opposite Sentosa] or at the nearby hawker centre [next the bus interchange] just before going over! Reason being the food n drinks there are more than doubled the cost!!

by ppoh

Watch out of any touting at places like Sim Lim Sqaure (our local IT malls). Don't buy it if you don't feel too comfortable. You can refer to CASE should you feel you've been 'cheated' in purchasing the item.

by ycwong

S'pore is generally a safe place is you exercise the usual caution with your valuables as you would at home.If you shop in Lucky Plaza (Orchard Rd), do be aware of touts pushing branded watches. It is best to ignore them with a friendly wave as they are known to exercise pressure tactics if you follow them to the stores. Prices at Lucky Plaza are also usually inflated for 'tourists'. So be prepared to bargain or seek out other places like Sim Lim Square or Fu Nan Centre for bargains in electonic & computer goods. You may also encounter instant lucky draws promised by touts if you fill in a survey form along the streets. You will almost certainly win the 'Grand Prize' and will have to proceed to the office to collect the prize only to discover that you have to sit through a 2 hr presentation where they try to pressure sell some stuff. So the message is...ignore those fellas!

The Singapore sling at raffles...

by JohnBee

The Singapore sling at raffles hotel. The Singapore sling is a pink colored cocktail. Some people say without trying a Singapore sling a visit to Singapore is incomplete. If you try a Singapore sling at Raffles hotel, it will cost you S$17,- not really value of money. You can also make it yourself:-One half-measure Gin -One quarter Cherry Brandy -One quarter mixed fruit juices ( Orange, Lime or Lemon, Pineapple ) -A few drops of Cointreau & Benedictine -A dash of Angostura Bitters -Top with a cherry and a slice of pineapple Instead of trying a Singapore sling I can recommend the high tea at Raffles to get a little of the atmosphere of the British colonial epoch. For more information look at one of my 'must see activities'.
