Getting Around Singapore By Bus

by ZENDER

Singapore's public bus transportation system is one of the best in the world - at least among those places that I have travelled to. So I have much to be thankful for living in this island nation...except sometimes I do wish that the people of my country do exhibit some common-sense or even improve their basic bus manners such as MOVE TO THE BACK of the BUS especially when the bus is not so crowded, it can give people in a hurry the wrong impressions that the bus is crowded when it is not and can you imagine the CHARGINED expression on your face when you realised that the bus you wanted to broad but did not because you thought it was crowded WAS actually only JAMMED packed in front but the BACK was empty......Anyway, it costs about S$0.70 to S$1.40 (for non-airconditioned buses) or S$0.80 to S$1.70 (airconditioned buses) depending on the distance of the journey travelled. The frequency...

Cable Car

by 34N118W

The cable car will carry you high over the bay to Sentosa, where you can find Underwater World and other attractions. It isn't cheap, but the view is breathtaking day or night and worth the experience. Once on Sentosa, you can catch a bus around the island. The monorail has been dismantled to make room for a new one which will connect directly to the MRT.

MRT

by 34N118W

Singapore has such a good transit system that getting around is really easy. The MRT will almost certainly get you in the vicinity of where you're going for S$1-2. There are also pre-paid cards you can buy if you plan on using the MRT a lot.

Comfort Taxi

by 34N118W

With Singapore's reputation for being an expensive country, I was surprised to find that the taxi rates were quite reasonable. A ride from the airport to Orchard road wasn't much more than S$10. I was also a little surpised to see that they use an older model Toyota. Singapore is such a modern city that I expected brand new cars. I'm sure that Singapore, being the efficient country it is, had very economical reasons this. However, some taxis did have a modern twist like automatic doors and even television for passengers!

Tiger Air

by 34N118W

If you're travelling on a budget to Singapore from somewhere in SE Asia, you should check out Tiger Air online. They're a no-frills airline, so don't expect assigned seating. It's first come, first serve. Tickets can be booked online for as little as $25, but you'll need to plan ahead as seats sell out quickly. You can also take advantage of this low-cost airline when travelling from Singapore to elsewhere in SE Asia. With enough advanced planning, you can get around SE Asia for next to nothing!

Neighbourhood Commuting

by DaDrifter

Now that's what I call 'Healthy Commuting' - step out of the MRT and hire a bicycle from the cycle docking station nearby.I noticed this Bicycle Docking Station just outside a MRT station, one of the first station of its kind in the Asia-Pacific Region ... I'm impressed.

Hire a Cab

by DaDrifter

A slightly more expensive way to commute is to take one of the many metered cabs running up and down the streets of Singapore. Tips are not common, and you are expected to pay the exact metered fare. My most memorable experience of this trip was an engaging conversation with a Cab driver, an elderly gentleman, possibly a retiree, who looked more like a civil servant than a cab driver to me. He had some very interesting things to say about Singapore - a few good and some pretty nasty stuff :)

Buses

by DaDrifter

Another good option is to take the local bus. The buses are equally efficient, but you have to get familiar with the routes. The EZ-Link card works on the buses as well. You need to carry the exact change if you want to pay the fare in cash. The ticketing machines inside the bus won't refund the balance if you pay more.

Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transport)

by DaDrifter

Singapore MRT is one of the most efficient and organised train systems in the world. Pick up a simple map of the train routings at the airport, get familiar with interchanges, and you are all ready to go. Goes without saying, you can't eat or drink inside the MRT stations, they are spotlessly clean. You have to pay a huge fine if you are caught doing so.You can either use the EZ-Link card on MRT or buy yourself a trip ticket from the vending machines at the stations.

Get an EZ-Link Card

by DaDrifter

Unless you have enough Moolah to go around in a cab, buying an EZ-Link card is the first thing to do when you arrive in Singapore. This card carries immense power, and it looks good in your wallet too :) Flash this card around, and doors will open for you ... MRT doors Lah. Can use card on MRT ... buses also can Lah ... oops just trying some Singlish Lah ;)You can buy one of these cards at the Customer Service counters at the MRT stations. The card can be topped up in easy denominations of S$5, S$10 etc.
