The MRT network in Singapore is good, especially getting from the center to the airport is a piece of cake (and only S$ 1.6 or so). Taxi´s are cheap too.
Most people arrive by air landing at Changi Airport. For me Changi is the most beautiful airport I've been to.

MRT - Mass Rapid Transport (nice fluffy name) is the best way to get round - cheap efficient and easy to use. New stations are being built at the mo which will make it even better.
Air travel will be the best alternative for visitors coming from distant countries unless having a few weeks for holiday. Changi airport makes air travel easy and effective.
Definitely by plane. Although, if you are in Indonesia or Malaysia you can get there by ship. In fact, if you are in Malaysia you can go there by car.
