take care when ordering coffee

by Bonobo2005

Be aware that in many of the cheaper coffestalls, foodcourts etc. you will not just get coffee when you order a coffee! On the contrary, in Singapore you will often be automatically served a coffee with milk and sugar. It sounds a bit weird for a European- at least for a Dutch. In much of Europe you order a coffee with milk and sugar if you desire such drink, but order a coffee for just coffee, with no additives. If you want to have a coffee without additives like milk and sugar in Singapore however, you have to order a black coffee, no sugar (not just a black coffee since for sure sugar will be added without a question!)I presume this might be the most useful tip in the Warnings and Dangers category on VT and I so a 5 star rating would be very appropriate! Thanks for understanding!

Taxis - Go by the Meter

by Aidy_p

Singapore has very strict rules about taxi drivers not using their meters. There are only a few taxi drivers who are brazen enough to risk breaking their rice-bowl by not charging by the meter. If you are ever caught in that situation, note down the taxi's licence plate number and report it to any of the government offices.

Standing on MRT sub-way platform

by victorwkf

The MRT sub-way stations which are above ground level have an open concept on the train platform. Do be very careful and stand behind the yellow line until the train doors open. There are warning signs at the station because there are several previous incidences where people have fallen onto the rail tracks, and some of them were sadly killed so do be very careful.

Be careful - it's low crime not no crime !

by patrickduffy

I know of a number of people ( westerners ) who have been targeted by local gangs in Singapore with a view to mugging and injuring them. Be careful and vigilant whilst there. This type of crime doesn't make the newspapers very often , but , believe me , it's not unlike any other city in the world , when it comes to this type of behaviour ! You,ve been warned.

Buyer Beware!

by roza.v.welzenes

Singapore has stringent consumer laws and actively promotes safe shopping. You'll rarely have any problems, but still be aware. When buying for an example: watches, cameras etc.... particularly in smaller shops where a sales person may accept a low offer but not give you an international guarantee. Ensure international guarantees are filled out correctly. When buying video equipment, it must be compatible with your system. Ask the shops if they can attach the correct plug for your country and also if you buy a DVD player, check first that it'll play your home country's disc. Why ??......... coz I have been through these experience a few times. So make sure, you have exactly what you want before leaving the shop.

Pitfalls of Foreigners working in Singapore

by vyxxyn

If you're a citizen from a country outside Singapore and are either coming to Singapore to look for work or to start working for a new company (not overseas posting in current job assignment), write to me asap. There are some serious issues you must be aware of before you embark on the job, or you risk losing more money than contracted. This applies to:- professionals, managers, and executive positions- where minimum salary is US$1000 a monthAn overseas opportunity is always exciting and in some cases, lucrative because of higher salaries than your home country. Often, the foreigner does not check the local laws before embarking on such a contract of employment, and can stand to lose more money than expected because of loopholes in the local employment, company and contract laws, which favor the guilty/criminal (usually employer). My advice will come from personal experience and even...

Tropical rain & sultry humidity

by Vita500

Try to remember the following:Singapore is less than 140 km north of the equator and therefore constantly hot and humid. In addition, you can expect daily rain-showers which can be drenching at times.Hence, prepare some light and airy clothes for your trip, take a light sweater for the air-conditioned indoor activities and borrow yourself an umbrella from the hotel if necessary. Also, always have enough fluid (drinks) with you. The unaccustomed heat and humidity can go pretty tough on your body.

People to avoid

by M.E.R.V

I know it's really hot and humid here and people tend to perspire more than average...BUT....but, i can't stand it when your smelling all nice and clean while some people just cant take the initiate to just clean themsleves up! Some people you should avoid getting close to are school kids in uniform(poo!) and military men(poo! poo!). Not too mention some others morons have got this metallic fishy stench! Yikes!!! Don't they even know they stink?!?!

Law vs ethics - Unethical laws?

by Tenzin

Oral sex and sodomy between consenting adults even if they are of the opposite sex were illegal in Singapore until Nov 06. Strangely oral sex between men is illegal but for lesbians it's fine. So much for sexual equality. Nonetheless please don't be caught with your pants down even in the privacy of your room as there is no privacy laws here.Do note that it is also illegal for not flushing the toilets after use. To the best of my knowledge, there has been court cases in the former but for the latter not as yet.So far I've not seen any cameras or policeman hidding in the public toilets yet. Remember there are no privacy laws in Singapore and if you are caught, chances are you can't protest against outrage of modesty either. There is no law against peeing on the floor either and the stain shows and the smell stinks in the vicinity of the urinals. So much for our marksmanship despite 2.5...

Watch out for the Haze!

by xuessium

In recent years, we have been getting haze due to excessive logging and forest slashing-&-burning from our neighbours. This is extremely acute during the drier months from April-September, usually peaking during July-September when the South West Monsoon drives even more haze into Singapore's airspace. Be prepared for hazy days, lingering smell of burnt ash and a general discomfort around the eyes and throat. People suffering from asthsma may need to take extra care. For per 3-hourly readings on the PSI Index which measures the air quality, please access this link from the National Environment Agency (NEA): PSI Reading
