Strolling around - Heat

by ant1606

Singapore is a neat place to enjoy. Even when the sightseeing tour is over, strolling without aim is a good experience for watching people in their everyday life. The only constraint is the high temperature/humidity, which at times makes it very hard to deal with. I found myself craving for whatever little shade I could find, at times being the mere shelter offered by street signs and traffic lights....whenever these spots were not already occupied by others! It's highly advisable to carry along some drinkable water and, why not, stop for a cold drink here and there. Try chilled coconut milk which is very refreshing.

Asking for money (be careful)

by victorwkf

Although Singapore is a very safe country with very few beggars and pickpockets, please be warned that there is now a new tactic for asking for money. Usually, the person will approach you can claimed that he has lost his wallet and cannot get back home. He or she will ask you for a small sum of money e.g. $2 so that they can get back home. Personally, I have encountered this a few times, even from teenagers. Once you give them the money, you will notice that they may approach other people with the same tactics.

Chewing Gum

by Nixter01

DO NOT eat chewing gum in singapore, it is against the law, if you are caught bringing it back into the country its big trouble, which I can see why, esp when you see what the kids of today do with it and where they stick it !

Dengue Fever On The Rise

by xuessium

The hot and humid weather favours mosquito breeding. This, despite the highly urbanised landscape. In recent years, Dengue Fever and it's more dangerous sibling, Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever is on the rise due to the warming Earth.Note: There are no vaccines for Dengue.

Handphone thefts and sex assaults !

by Chyan

If you arrive in Singapore, take care of your handphone of the latest model. There are many handphone thefts in the suburbs and the city centre of Singapore. If you are a pretty lady from Vietnam and China, be careful of sexual harrassment and assaults in Singapore if you happen to drink at a local bar. There are many greedy Singaporean old men that take advantage of foreign ladies.Singapore is as complicated as Johor Bahru. So, do not talk to strangers who claim to know you.

Fear the Durian!

by Rodan44

When in Singapore, if you happen to be at a local produce market or produce section of a supermarket, you may catch the scent of a dead rotting carcass. Upon closer inspection, you will find that this putrid, nauseating smell is actually coming from a football-sized green spiked fruit known as the Durian. Locals will try to tell you that durian is a delicious delicacy and that you absolutely must try it.... It is at this point that you should run! Run as fast and as far away from the durian as possible! Whatever you do, do not eat the durian! I repeat... DO NOT EAT THE DURIAN!!! And don't let them trick you by offering you durian pudding, or durian strudel, or durian cake, or durian smoothies, or durian cream puffs, or durian ice cream, or durian pizza (ok, maybe that don't have durian pizza yet, but I'm sure someone has thought of it). When I first moved to Singapore in 2002, a local...

Dont even THINK about it...

by canttaketheskyfromme

You've been told a hundred times before but it's still true, don't even THINK about trying to ship drugs into Singapore... there really is no tolerance or leniancy for those who flout the rules. Just this year an Australian was hanged for trying it. it's ins't worth it. The land crossings at Woodlands and Tuas are not any less strict, reagrdless of what you may imagine. Nothings worth dying for.

It's no Sling in Singapore

by SabrinaSummerville

I travelled to Singapore alone and in the taxi from the airport to my hotel the taxi driver was full of seemingly innocent questions.I had been travelling for 26 hours, so when I checked in and went to my room all I wanted to do was sleep. As I walked into the room the phone was ringing and the voice at the end of the line claimed to be from my tour company in Singapore, welcoming me to the City and offering me a free tour of the City. I had already booked two tours and told them I would prefer to wait for one of those as I was so tired.I sank into my bed and had just nodded off to sleep when the phone rang again - same story. This happened every hour on the hour until, on the fourth call, I decided to give in and go for the tour.I was so tired that it never struck me as odd that the alleged tour guide would meet me outside the hotel gates, and not within the vast grounds where all other...

Keep the city clean!

by Yasmi

The harsh laws in Singapore keep the city really safe. The only thing to worry is to not get fined your self. Littering, forgetting to flush a public toilet and going over the street in the wrong place can all give you a fine up to 1000SGD, and if you are a smoker, remember to throw the stub in an ashtray!

No nudity in your castle or anywhere

by xuessium

This is Singapore. No topless or nude sunbathing.Finding yourself in jail will seriously spoil your holidays.________________________Please note that under Singapore's law, if you wish to be naked in your own house but it's still possible for your neighbours to see you in your birthday suit, you are still in foul of the law for outrage of modesty. So draw those curtains or be clothed. Your house is not your castle.
