Be carefull where you do that!

by Travel2write

Singapore is a city of cement and a dream come true for any skateboarder. Although you will have a tough time finding a place that would let you ride it. All parks and city streets are off limits! I really get a kick out of these signs everywhere heeding warning of fines!

Personal Safety

by ant1606

Singapore is a very safe place, its crime rate ranks among the lowest on Earth. You won't see much police around and residents' opinion is that there's no need for more.At times, you might see policewomen scooting around town in their elgant outfit and gear.

Air Conditioning

by Scarlie

Singapore spends on air-conditioning the equivalent of the GDP of a few developing countries! The contrast between outdoors and indoors is the starkest I have ever experienced. Make sure you always have something to keep you warm - a shawl or a jumper, and closed shoes if you have cold feet.If you stay at a hotel, you may also want room service know not to touch the aircon settings, or you'll come home to Antarctica.

Little India on Sunday: Foreign Workers

by xuessium

Little India became a spot for catching up and buying weekly groceries for the many thousands of Indian labourers working in Singapore. It can get very cramped and crowded especially after 5pm on Sundays and this crowd will not dispersed till about 9pm. Petty crimes have been known to happen and I have had a female colleague who came close to being molested when she visited Little India alone.

No monkey business here

by DaDrifter

Don't try to feed any monkeys while you are in Singapore, or you'll have to pay a huge fine ... How much??? Nope, you are not even close ... its a whopping S$ 10,000 for this one. Jeez ... with that kind of money, I could buy that diamond ring, get married, buy me a new car, get a dog, live un-happily thereafter, and still have some money left to buy me some Es Melo (Ice Milo Lah ... see the Local Custom tips). Notice no smiley face here Lah, cannot play play ok.(Translation : Notice no smiley face here, this is serious.)

No ifs and butts here

by DaDrifter

Smoking is not permitted in public places in Singapore. These include MRT stations, buses, cabs, cab stands, elevators, offices, restaurants, malls and most other places where there is a gathering of 5 people or more. Offenders have to pay the usual S$ 1,000 fine (Why am i not surprised ?).Cigarettes are prohibitively expensive, every packet carries a stiff health warning and some very graphic images, such as the ones shown in this pictures.

Asia's FINEst

by DaDrifter

Singapore is indeed one very FINE CITY (all the pun intended!). Short of getting slapped in the hand everytime you so much as jaywalk, there is a FINE for most everything. Singapore memorabilia, such as the ones in the picture, play lightly with the Singaporean proclamation of being one very FINE CITY :) - here, when you get caught littering you pay a S$ 1,000 fine, try spitting on the streets and you pay another S$ 1,000 fine. Forgot to flush in a public toilet ? ... bad bad bad you, Well, a S$ 1,000 fine will do nicely. Now for some good news - Most public toilets have auto-flushing now, so being forgetful is not such a big problem anymore.Living by these rules is just a way of life in Singapore, once you accept that, it's not such a big deal really.

Excercise some Control Lah, Ur-ine Singapore

by DaDrifter

I just couldn't help myself, but take a picture of this sign. I found this inside an elevator at an apartment block. My initial reaction was : "Wah Liao ! You really cannot do it in a lift one ....... Can Meh ?" (Translation : Wow ! You mean you really cannot do it in a lift ? ....... or can you ?) I am sure such signs are a thing of the past now, but it does give you an idea of the seriousness with which such issues are dealt in Singapore (or maybe ... just maybe, this was targeted at someone like me, us folks who come from India and have this misguided notion that it's perfectly fine to do it anywhere ... behind a tree, by a wall, behind a bush, in a park, by the walls of a heritage monument ...) Ooops ... this is not the right place to discuss that, perhaps that should feature in India - Local Customs pages ... sorry eh.

Shop around!

by TracyG

Because of the large numbers of camera/electrical shops and the equally large numbers of tourists, make sure that you really do shop around and bargain hard. They are sometimes very convincing over a good price and then you can go around the corner and get the same item for S$80 less.

SENTOSA TOILETS - WARNING FOR LADIES

by vyxxyn

This tip is in reference to public toilets which have shower facilities, often found as free-standing little huts or "houses" off pathways. Many women have encountered voyeurs watching them in the shower, either over walls or through holes in the ceiling. Guess the low walls do not help either. We get emails of such encounters from time to time, and I personally have encountered it last year. I went to one near Palawan Beach after a sweaty rollerblading session and used one of the shower cubicles. As I closed trhe door I noticed a gaping hole in the ceiling. Looking up, I saw a shadowy figure through that hole, and it moved! Subsequently I tried lodging a police report but was told they couldn't do much about it, they can put a restraining order on these voyeurs but new ones will always come. Toilets have been upgraded and yet men still manage to find their way in unobserved.
