Singapore is a safe country. It is unlikely for a tourist to clash into any dangers while touring around the Island. But it could be only as extra information or maybe you are just a cautious person so you might want to pocket them while in Singapore.Police = 999Ambulance = 995Police Hotline = 1800-353 0000Traffic Police = 6547 0000Flight Information (24-hours) = 1800-542 4422 Tourism Information (24-hours) = 1800-736 2000 Directory Assistance = 6777 7777 or 100Time of day = 1711Weather = 6542 7788International Calls = 104

SENTOSA BEACH - Jellyfish & strong tides!

by vyxxyn

There are several man-made islets like these off each beach in Sentosa looking like tropical paradise, and they look so inviting. In an earlier trip, my friend tried swimming to a smaller islet but missed it because the tide pull was too strong (although the waves seem so gentle and the islet looked closeby). He is a good swimmer/diver so made it back to shore alive. In the news from time to time we hear of victims who don't. Besides the strong tide, another danger is jellyfish. The water may be murky and if you can't see them it doesn't mean they aren't there.

WATCH OUT FOR SAD STORIES CONS!

by xuessium

They are usually elderly women or young ladies that looked a little spastic in horrid and old clothings. The same old story goes that they had run out of money to catch a bus home and ask for your pity in giving them some money so that they can go home to their family blah blah blah. Basically it is a story to pull at your heart strings and to most tourists, parting with a dollar or two is no big deal, thinking you had done a good deed by helping these "poor" locals. BE-WARNED!! They are usually part of a gang. While their presence may one day give folks who really needed help a "cry wolf" effect, their "creativity" in begging for money should not be condoned. The tell tale signs would be presistence in trying to part you and your money. Shoo them off, ignore them or if you have time to play with them, try dragging them to the nearest Police station or post. The last resort should see...

My experience with the people!

by josephljtwrk

There weren't any dangers or proof found disliking any of the Maylay or Chinesse or European desedants. Actually they were very warm and communicated with confidence. I thought they represented the americans well and gave accurate accounts and tips to tourist. I was at a jewlery establishment learning the language like Lah and how the innocent spoke with clarification and love. It gave in. I used it at home and was loved by a distinction only GOD and his people could remember. The thought was LAH!

Toilets!

by leanne_pearc

I am very sorry to say however the only problems i had with Singapore was the toilets. Some were fairly clean however most were very dirty.Always keep tissues with you just in case there was no toilet paper. Most areas have the normal sit on toilets however some did have the squat toilets and i just found it very hard to use.

You won't get the death penalty for chewing gum!

by xuessium

I had travelled to many places and many folks had asked me this. NO, YOU DON'T GET CANED OR THE DEATH PENALTY FOR CHEWING GUM IN SINGAPORE. You can bring a stick or 2 in for personal consumption but you are not allowed to bring in a carton or try to sell it. The sale of gum is illegal, but the act of chewing is not! In fact, gum for folks trying to quit smoking is still available. Biggest misconception!!

Heavy Human Traffic on Weekends

by bkoon

Try getting to Orchard Road and you will find that the Singaporeans are all at the malls along Orchard Road. It would be nice to head down to Orchard Road to people-watch. However, if you are intending to do some real shopping, avoid that area during weekends as there are just so many people that the sales staff may not be able to entertain you at their best.

Very safe

by smcinspiron

I am shocked that a forum member, Fazuha (forgot the spelling), said that in singapore you can get into jail if you can't pay up your utilities, among other atrocious claims. That's a boatload of rubbish!I am Singaporean and I have lived here all my life. Nobody EVER gets into jail for being poor. The poor in Singapore gets to live in government flats and their utilities are subsized or free if they have no money and no ability to work. I know this because my friend works with the estate management council and she helps the poor to pay their utilities by letting them work around the estate to offset the utilities. There are almost no homeless people on the streets. If you do see a homeless person (very rare), it's more likely that they refused or did not seek help. The worries about prohibitive fines are also unfounded. Sure, you'll see lots of signs but because you will hardly see a...

Traffic Jams during the Festive Season

by bpacker

Take note of this if you're driving in Singapore. Massive Traffic Jams can be expected in Orchard Road, Serangoon Road and Geylang Serai Road during the months of November as the streets are decorated with pretty lights. Lots of Singaporean drivers will drive slowly and agitate you as they look out of the windows to gawk at the lights.
