Jeongeup (sometimes pronounced as Chongup in English) is a relative small town of about 140,000 people. This town is located at the Jeollabuk-do province in southern part of South Korea, somewhere in-between the more famous cities of Jeonju and Gwangju. The main Honam Expressway is just next to this town, so transportation by bus is convenient. There is also a train station at the town centre area (see map), which is small and also consist of the Express Bus Terminal.

The climate of Jeongeup is perhaps the best during autumn (October to November) when the temperature is cooling and dry, and the skies are normally clean. The autumn foliage adds to the colours. See part 2 of this tip and more information about the town is at the website below.

If you want to experience life in a typical Korean town, then Jeongeup could be an ideal choice. However, you must be prepared for the language barrier (hardly anyone knows English here). Also, the town itself does not have many major attractions, as most of them are located in the nearby areas, especially Naejangsan National Park which is famous for its scenery especially the autumn foliage colours.

The town itself is very safe (as the rest of South Korea), so it is easy for you to walk around. Also, there is a very good and free travel brochure called "A beautiful town all through year! Jeongeup Tour Guide - Jeongeup-si" which contains useful information, maps, attractions etc.

Famous products from Jeongeup and surroundings include the Danpung Miin Rice, Danpung Miin Beef, hot peppers, melons etc.

Express bus terminal at Jeongeup, South Korea
4 more images

One of the major landmarks of Jeongeup town centre must be the Express Bus Terminal where buses from other parts of South Korea (including Seoul) arrive and depart. Not surprisingly, this area is very busy and there are many shops surrounding the bus terminal, including some selling interesting fruits. The building of the express bus terminal essentially has two sections, one section with buses to-and-from Seoul and another section next to it with buses to-and-from other major cities in South Korea e.g. Jeonju, Gwangju, Busan etc. English is available at the signages and the staff at the ticket counters can understand English (anyway, the buses are very frequent, just make sure you take the right one).

Arriving at Jeongeup town, South Korea

Jeongeup town is located just next to the Honam Expressway, which runs from north to south from Seoul to the southern parts of South Korea. When you are about to arrive at Jeongeup by express bus via this expressway, you will see many agricultural fields forming the foreground with the buildings of Jeongeup at the background with green mountains as the backing.
