View from Top Cloud Bathroom (Unreal) by jburron Finding a bathroom in Seoul can be a challenge sometimes. Many of the restaurants (even Western food ones) do not have their own bathrooms--especially if they are located inside a building (which most of them are). Also, from the street it's tough to know where to turn when nature calls. A few tips: (i) all buildings have bathrooms on the main floors that are (generally) open to the public. Just walk in and look for the signs. (ii) Learn how to say "Hwa Jang Shil Oh-di-say-o" (Where is the bathroom?). They may call it a toilet, restroom, washroom, water closet , W.C., or any number of other things, but the Korean phrase is Hwa Jang Shil. (iii) Learn how to squat in the Asian (hole in the floor) type toilet, as you may HAVE to use one at some point. Basically, it's like going in the woods, except you have to aim.
A white couple and their friend were in downtown Seoul with what looked like a 3-4 year-old. I couldn't really tell the age of the child because its butthole was pointed my way...they had changed it on a cement step right in the middle of town. I guess they couldn't find a bathroom. Another one: saw an ajuma (lady, aged 40-50) go behind a short wall, squat and appear again. Looks like women value convenience as much as men (drunk men here seem to have little problem with relieving themselves in public as well). Leave a Comment

A wide selection of seaweed and rice and stuff. by jburron When I\'m coming home late or up early and heading to work there is one place that I like to go to get a snack/meal. Seven-eleven. Yes, it sounds weird, but 7-11 has some great \'sam-gak-kim-bap\' (Three angle seaweed and rice...Triangle Kimbap). It is fresh (they deliver daily at about 1AM, don\'t ask how I know this), it\'s healthy (usually rice with 1/3 the fat of bread, and includes other good stuff like tuna or beef), easy (just tear off the plastic covering and you\'re good to go) and, most importantly, delicious. I\'ve introduced many foreigners to this and after some initial hesitation (seaweed and what?) everyone is an instant convert. Oh, did I mention they\'re cheap? About 700 won (USD 0.60) apiece compared to 1,500 won for a ham sandwich. I usually get 2 and they are pretty filling. Leave a Comment

Ok, I took this info from JoongAng's online paper...but it just sounds like info that a VTer would need here. According to our informal survey, the two most common pickup lines in Korea are universal: "Sigan isseoyo?" which literally means "Do you have time?" and "Eodiseo bongeot gattayo," which means "You look familiar." A popular pickup line among young Koreans of both genders is telling the person of interest that your cell phone battery has died ("Jeonhwa batteriga da tteoreojyeot neundeyo...") and asking if you can borrow their phone ("Jeonhwa jom billyeo jusillaeyo?"). Because cell phones in Korea are equipped with caller ID, this move lets you find out your prospective date's number by calling your own mobile. Their number in memory, you can ring them or leave romantic text messages later. Lots more cool info here. Leave a Comment

Hein Sa or Hein Temple, is a World Heritage site. The central focus of the temple is a building housing aprx. 84,000 carved wooden blocks of Buddha's sayings. They date back about 900 years. The easiest way to get there if you have your own transport is to leave the expressway about 20 miles south of Seoul and turn east on highway 42 at the Singil exit. Continue east until you see the exit for highway #3--exit right (south). Follow it down until you see the signs for Heinsa. This allows you to miss most of the hectic travel. Although the coast route looks attractive don't do it. It is very slow and dangerous just to get there. Stick to #3. At the temple there are souvenir shops where for a few dollars you can buy a rubbing of one of the blocks, a place where you can buy a tile for the roof and have your name painted on it.

Red Devils. Picture: Aaron Irving by Hmmmm As we are all more than aware, 2002 heralded the Fifa Football World Cup, Co-hosted by Japan and Korea. I remember before the world Cup started, a lot of Korean Journalists went to some football crazy countries like Brazil, Argentina and Italy and asked locals in the street, "Where is this year's World Cup being Hosted?" Virtually everybody replied "Japan!" Much to the disappointment of the Korean public who were hoping that the World cup would Showcase south Korea. Anyway, after the world Cup had finished the Journalists asked the same question to the same football crazy people, from the same football crazy countries. Virtually Everybody replied "Korea!" Why, well Korea did showcase themselves, with amazing spirit, support and sportsmanship.
I will never forget being part of the support. The thousands of people in the streets, in the city squares, filling the stadiums in a sea of red. All yelling Slogans and singing songs like "Pilsung Korea" by Yoon Do Hyun Band. Its was contagious, and compelling. One could do nothing but be picked up and swept away with the momentum. The picture to the left shows a small portion of the 'Red Army' All chating "Dae Han Min Guk, Da Da Da Dum Dum!" So exciting. I am so happy to experience mass celebration at this level. Now I know what the Korean people mean by 'Oori" or 'We'. Leave a Comment

School by nepalgoods The Korean Language is related to languages of Central Asia and Finland. I found it very difficult to learn. But the script is an alphabetical script, even if it does not look like. It is said, that in 16th century a Korean King gathered some wise men of his country and ordered them to invent a script, which was more suitable to their language than the Chinese Charactres, which were used. The new script also should be very easyly be leearned by everybody. After some time they found the Korean Script, which is in fact easily to learn. I learned it within a few hours. Of course that does not mean, that you understand the language, but being able to read the signs of busstations and some words on the menue in a restaurant helps a lot. Leave a Comment

in the northeastern quadrant of Korea, roads crossing mountains feature switchbacks and unimproved surfaces to improve traction in the icy and snowy winter season. Straight paved roads up the mountainsides would not safely allow transit when covered with ice. The first two pictures are from an area about 20 miles north of Kapyeong and the other 2 somewhat more east approaching Huach'on.In these photos, the mountains in the far distance lie within North Korea. The last is northeast of Chuch'on. This is serious driving yearround. Leave a Comment

It is hard to overestimate the bone-numbing penetrating cold of the Korean winter. The coldest place I visited was at 30 degrees below zero with a 40 mile per hour wind. Cold. For more on the cold, please visit the "Frozen Waterfall" travelogue on this page. The last image shows the Land of the Morning Calm with the cloud layer below mountain top level and seen across the Pukhan River south of Chuch'on. Leave a Comment

Some of the most intense fighting during the Korean conflict was in the moutainous terrain north and particularly northeast of Seoul. Given the inhospitable weather patterns of the Korean peninsula, it is hard to imagine warfare in this environment and setting. Leave a Comment

Election Day.... by kenmerk A poster from Presidential Election Day 1994. (or there-abouts) Being president is not for the faint of heart in Korea.... The eventual winner of this election, Kim, young-sam, (far right) and his eventual replacement Kim, Dae-jong, (second from right) both left office in disgrace... (for bribery scandals and the like...) The two presidents that preceded them (Roh, Tae-wu and Chun du-hwan) were both thrown into jail... (for bribery scandals and the like...) Leave a Comment
