Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty

by SLLiew

There are many sites of Royal Tombs, all within 40 kilometers of Seoul and have been designated as UNESCO heritage site. These tombs have been classified as1) Neung tombs for thhe kings and queens and those posthumously granted such titles.2) Won tombs for Crown Princes and wives and parents of royalty.Joseon Dynasty were Korean rulers spanning from 1392 to 1910. Generally, I found that these tombs are spread out, small and now all covered with very green grass - well maintained for visitors.

Hangul - Reading Korean

by SLLiew

You will know you are in Korea (or little Koreatown) when you see the unique Korean written script "Hangul"Both North and South Korea used to use the "Hanja" or Chinese characters which can still be seen at temples and palaces.Hangul is a phonetic script based on the combination of 14 consonants and 10 vowels. It is fun to learn just to recognize the word "Seoul" or "Busan"A few characters can go a long way.

Power Cables

by ant1606

Except for the newest or totally remodeled parts of Korean towns, other areas show the add-ons related to the electric power distribution. Inextricable tangles run horizontally, vertically and sideways across buildings and poles. Certainly not the best in terms of safety, I just wonder how can these things withstand the heavy seasonal rains and what an earthquake would cause!

Did you know that.....

by ghweeh

Korea is located in the northern part of the Asian continent. It's a country with four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.Spring: lasts from late Mar to May with picturesque blooming flowers covered the country's mountains and fieldsSummer: lasts from Jun to early Sept with a hot and humid weather throughoutAutumn: lasts from Sept to Nov and also the best season to visit Korea with this mild weather. Winter: lasts from Dec to mid-Mar where the weather turn bitterly cold and heavy snow in the northern & eastern parts of Korea. Nevertheless, it's also a favourite destination for skiing goers. So Make sure you are dressed approporiately for the different seasons.

The Mountain Roads (5 photos)

by nicolaitan

in the northeastern quadrant of Korea, roads crossing mountains feature switchbacks and unimproved surfaces to improve traction in the icy and snowy winter season. Straight paved roads up the mountainsides would not safely allow transit when covered with ice. The first two pictures are from an area about 20 miles north of Kapyeong and the other 2 somewhat more east approaching Huach'on.In these photos, the mountains in the far distance lie within North Korea. The last is northeast of Chuch'on. This is serious driving yearround.

the coldest cold (4 photos}

by nicolaitan

It is hard to overestimate the bone-numbing penetrating cold of the Korean winter. The coldest place I visited was at 30 degrees below zero with a 40 mile per hour wind. Cold. For more on the cold, please visit the "Frozen Waterfall" travelogue on this page. The last image shows the Land of the Morning Calm with the cloud layer below mountain top level and seen across the Pukhan River south of Chuch'on.

The food may need to cook!

by squidly2

Not a favorite thing, but a piece of advice!!I had many wonderful experiences in Korea, and one bad. Myself and 3 others got food poisoning, but it was our own fault. We ordered a chicken-soup from a small tent-restaurant by a river. They brought us a chicken soup in a pot with an adjustible heater on it. We didn't know that the chicken in the soup wan't cooked. Like the Korean BBQ's, we were supposed to cook this ourselves. Instead, having just finished a long hiking trip we dug right in. The impatient Americans learned our lesson a few hours later...

Buddhist Temples

by iwys

Some of the most beautiful buildings in Korea are the Buddhist temples. Of the ones I have visited, my two favourites, and possibly the most famous temples in the country, are Bulguksa in Gyeongju and Bomeosa near Busan. Sa means temple in Korean.

Land of Four Seasons

by iwys

Every Korean will be quick to point out to you the fact that Korea has four distinct seasons. This may not seem so remarkable if you come from Europe or North America, but in Asia, where many countries are tropical or sub-tropical, it is more noteworthy. Winters in Korea can be bitterly cold, with sub-zero temperatures, biting winds, snow and ice. Spring is short, but it is the season of cherry blossom. Summers are hot and humid. Summer is the rainy season in Korea. The best season is autumn, when the weather is just about perfect and the colours of the mountain forests are beautiful. The best weather of the year is in October and the first half of November.
