Some Useful Phrases

by i-s-a

Going to another country, it is important for a visitor to know a few local words and phrases. In Korea, a lot of people still do not speak English. Those who do, are sometimes shy to use it. Saying "thank you" and "hello" in Korean goes a long way. The locals appreciate you more for trying. They become more friendly and helpful too. Try these simple words and have fun!GREETINGSAnnyeonghasimikka (formal) - Hello.Annyeonghaseyo (less formal) - Hello. Annyeonghigaseyo - Good Bye. (to person leaving)Annyeonghigyeseyo - Good Bye. (to person staying)Mannaseobangapseumnida - Nice to meet you.CIVILITIES Ye/Ne - Yes.Aniyo - No.Gamsahamnida - Thank you.Gwaenchanseumnida - You're welcome.Sillyehamnida - Excuse me.Butakhamnida - Please.Mianhamnida - I'm sorry.Jeireumeum....mnida - My name is...Jeoneun....seowatseumnida - I'm from... the rugged terrain (5 photos)

Some of the most intense fighting during the Korean conflict was in the moutainous terrain north and particularly northeast of Seoul. Given the inhospitable weather patterns of the Korean peninsula, it is hard to imagine warfare in this environment and setting.

Korea - Language and Transcription

by ant1606

Korean language, Han-Kuk-Eoh, is classified into the Ural-Altaic group.Contrary to general belief, it's not like Chinese or Japanese but it's written using the Hangul alphabet composed of 24 basic letters, which was first introduced around AD 1450 under King Sejong. My command of Korean language is scarce, but knowing how to read and pronounce is of great help to understand directions, places and food on a menu.Although common, English is not spoken everywhere and we all need food on a daily basis! One of the most difficult things for Westerners is the fact that the transcription from Hangul into Romanic characters poses difficulties for some consonants. This can mislead when trying to recognize people's names or locate places on maps.It takes a little time to familiarize. Common mismatches occur between G and K, D and T, R and L, B and P, and J and CH.Korean government has recently...

Vertical World

by ant1606

Seoul and suburbs, as well as other cities, have rapidly grown in the recent years and space is precious. Most buildings are new and arranged as multistorey business centers. When looking for something, rather than a horizontal view scan, go for a vertical scan. You may find a restaurant on 2nd floor, a church on 4th and a bar on 7th.Convenience stores are abundant and open 24/7. They are commonly found at ground level, just walk around a couple of blocks to find a few.

Pickup Lines

by jburron

Ok, I took this info from JoongAng's online paper...but it just sounds like info that a VTer would need here.According to our informal survey, the two most common pickup lines in Korea are universal: "Sigan isseoyo?" which literally means "Do you have time?" and "Eodiseo bongeot gattayo," which means "You look familiar."A popular pickup line among young Koreans of both genders is telling the person of interest that your cell phone battery has died ("Jeonhwa batteriga da tteoreojyeot neundeyo...") and asking if you can borrow their phone ("Jeonhwa jom billyeo jusillaeyo?"). Because cell phones in Korea are equipped with caller ID, this move lets you find out your prospective date's number by calling your own mobile. Their number in memory, you can ring them or leave romantic text messages later.Lots more cool info here.
