What Makes Jeju-do So Special?
by Tom_Fields
The Grandfather is a carved piece of rock, which (if you look closely) is also a phallic symbol. Local people set these things up in front of their homes and businesses. They also guard temples, public buildings, and other places. They're carved out of pumice. This black, volcanic rock is the lightest in the world. Nowhere else but Jeju-do can you find these.Everywhere is evidence of the island's violent, volcanic past. One example is a huge rock, which a volcanic eruption hurled miles from where it burst out of the earth. The island is known not only for its delicious seafood, but also its fruit. The two main fruits grown here are pineapple and oranges. Jeju-do is a very healthy place.
