 | Jeju-do Things To Do | Tips 31 - 40 of 147 | | Ilchulbong, or Sunrise Peak, on the extreme eastern tip of Jeju-do, is a 182-m high crater, shaped like a punch bowl. All Korean visitors feel obliged to get up in the early hours of the morning in order to climb Ilchulbong and catch the sunrise. When I was there, I woke up in time, but it was bitterly cold, cloudy and windy. I'd climbed Hallasan in a blizzard the previous day and was about to go to Udo, so I turned over and went back to sleep again. Anyway, the mountain itself was an impressive enough sight for me. Updated: Jan 31, 2006 Jeju-Do is a relatively small island. The best and easiest way of getting around is by car and renting a car is therefore a MUST DO! Thanks to Jeju-Do's very progressive road system (due to the soccer World Cup in 2002 many roads have been newly constructed or repaired), driving is pretty comfortable and easy (for more information on renting a car, please refer to my Transportation tips) You're able to go from South to North in less than an hour or make a once-around-the-island-trip along the coast, which might take you a whole day (counting in a couple of sight-seeing stops and coffee breaks). My recommendation: Rent a car, ask for an English road map of Jeju-Do, mark the destinations that you are interested to see and hit the road! My favorite destinations: 1. Jeju-Do World Cup Stadium - supposed to be the world's nicest stadium due to its great location and design) 2. Mystery Road - something you have never seen before: a road where your car is literally rolling uphill!!! 3. Jeju Folk Village - good impression of how people used to live in the 19th century 4. Sangumburi crater - a vulcaniv crater that is 350m in diaeter and 100m deep. The scenery is pretty nice 5.Manjanggul - the world's longest lava tube (13.4 km!) 6. Gwaneumsa - an impressive buddhist temple hidden along the Northern tip of Mt. Halla National Park along road 1117 7. 1100 Road - this road crosses the island via the mountains (highest elevation: 1100m) and offers some spectacular views 8. Hallasan National Park - one of the nicest Nat'l Parks in Korea with Mount Halla rising from the middle. Great hiking possibilities. Check out my Travelogue for some impressions Leave a Comment

The Jeju Gimnyeong Maze is a located in the Manjang Lava-tube and the Gimnyeong Snake cave area. The CK-Maze was established by an American professor at Cheju National University in 1987 based on a design by the world's foremost maze designer, Mr.Adrian Fisher and today, it is the only significant symolic foliage maze in Asia. The major symbols, created by the beautiful hedges of Leylandii trees, are: a snake which symbolizes Jeju's earliest form of animism; a pony's head symbolizing pasturing of the Mongol pony by the Mongols in 1276. The western portion of the maze symbolizes the wrecked 'Sparrowhawk', the ship that brought Hendrik Hamel, the first westerner to introduce Korea and Jeju Island to western readers in the late 17th century; a large, flat stone in the eastern portion symbolizing the Jeju dolmen, associated with the Bronze Age of Jeju. Three bridges totaling forty six meters and an observatory give visitors ample opportunities for picture taking. Cheonjiyeon waterfall is one of the three most famous waterfalls on Jeju Island. It is 22m in height,12m in width and cascades down the cliffs facing into a 20m deep pond. The area is lighted at night, making it a romantic escape for lovers. The night lights also highlight a "hidden" face in the cliffs which can be difficult to see during the day, unless the light is just right. Address: 666-7, Cheonji-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do

The mysterious road is about 7km from Jeju international airport and was called "Mysterious Road" because so named because a car in neutral will appear to roll uphill rather than down. It was first discovered in 1980 by a taxi driver who was giving a driving tour to the newlywed couple.Today,it is visited by many tourist who want to experience the unusual natural force. There are also many empty bottles along the road, try it,the bottle will roll upward instead of downward. Or try running upward the road, you will find it easier than running downward.

This solitary basalt formation is called Oedolgae. It was formed as a result of a valcanic activity. During the Koryeo dynasty (918-1392), General Choe-Yeong was on jeju to suppress the Mongols who has occupied the island from 1218,the Mongol forces made their final and fatal stand on Beomseom (Tiger Island) which is seaward form Oedolgae. Another name of Oedolgae, General rock, come from an legend that General Choe-Yeong disguised the rock to appear like a giant military general and the mongols took it as a well established battle lines. They were so terrified that they committed suicide. It is also called Namju haegeumgang because the Oedolgae stands in Goseok harbor which is surrounded by screen like jagged cliffes. This is also the filming location of Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) which in In episodes 30 & 31, Dae Jang Geum stands alone on a precipice looking out to the sea in firm resolution. From Jeju-si, one can take a boat ride around Sunrise Peak. It's an even more imposing spectacle than it is from the land. This extinct volcano rises straight up from the sea. Leave a Comment
