Cheonjiyeon Waterfall

These waterfalls along with the surrounding park and walkways leading up to it provide a decent place to stroll around at night. Even though it's not free. There are a number of bridges and benches along the way, as well as various plant life to add to the mood. Supposedly a certain type of nocturnal eel is found in the pools around the falls, though it's too dark to see anything not actually jumping out of the water. The waterfalls aren't going to overwhelm you by their size (22m high) or power, but on a clear, cool evening in Jeju, the atmosphere is quite pleasant. I can't imagine it would be more interesting in the daytime, especially when you'd be fighting more tourists. Overall it's not exactly what I'd consider a must-see item. For me, I was able to just wind down here from a long day of sightseeing and enjoy the sound of the falls.

Hiking up Sunrise Peak

This spectacular, extinct volcano offers the best views of the island. The crater is also quite a sight. The hike to the top is moderatly strenuous, but well worth it. You can take a boat ride around it, as well. This should be on every visitor's itinerary.

Yongmori and Mt Sanbang

Yongmori is a picturesque stretch of the southwest coast of Jeju-do. Here are some of the most beautiful coastal rock formations that I've ever seen. It's a favorite tourist destination. Be careful, as the rocky terrain here is very rugged and full of holes and cracks.

Chunjeyun Waterfall

Chunjeyun Waterfall is also on the south coast of Jeju-do. It's located inside a long, deep canyon that has been cut through the volcanic rock over the course of millions of years. It's a pretty good hike to get to it, but very enjoyable. Have a look at the ornate bridge on the way, which also affords the visitor an excellent view of the falls and the canyon.According to local lore, during ancient times heavenly female angels once came here at night to bathe (sorry I missed that). This is one of the most beautiful places in Korea.

U-do ( Islet )

U-do ( Cow Island ) got it's name because it's shape resembles a cow lying down. The 8 scenic views of Cow Island iclude " Day, Night, Sky, Earth, Front, Back, East and West "It's also renowned as the location of movies such as " Love in October " and " Mermaid Princess " ( see more picture at travelogue page )

Seongsan Ilchulbong ( Sunrise Peak )

182m, Seongsan Ilchulbong ( Sunrise Peak ), located at the northeastern tip of Jeju Island. It is a Volcanic crater surrounded by 99 sharp rocks. Upon seeing the sunrise, visitors make their wishes for the blessful year. ( see more picture at travelogues )

Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls

The waterfall falls from a precipice with thundering sounds, creating white water pillars. It has the name Cheonjiyon, meaning ?the heaven and the earth meet and create a pond?. At 22 m in height and 12 min width, the waterfall tumbles down to the pond to produce awe-inspiring scenery. The valley near the waterfall is home to Elaeocarpus sylvestrisvar, ellipticus, which is Natural Monument No. 163, Psilotum nudum, Castanopsis cuspidatavar.sieboldii, Xylosma congestum, Camellia and other subtropical trees. This place is also famous as home to the eel of Anguilla mauritiana, whichis Natural Monument No. 27 and is active primarily at night. The Chilsipri Festival is held in every September at the falls.

Seongsan Sunrise Festival

Though this is one of the major celebrations in Jeju, it's little known outside of the international comunity. A pity really, but celebrating the last day of the calendar year(31DEC, every year ) over here in Seongsan Illchubong, is really a fantastic experience.Can you imagine, drinking, eating and dancing to the beat of a tribal drum the whole night long near the site of an ancient volcanic crater? Yes, the SeongSan Sunrise Festival is all about doing that. You dance the whole night away, watch the sky explode in fireworks at midnight and climb to the top of the mountain just before daybreak to watch the first sunrise of the year. I had a ball of a time doing just that when I celebrated the last day of the new year over here and I'm not even a local!! See my Travelogue for more pictures and details.
