Ilchulbong

by iwys

Ilchulbong, or Sunrise Peak, on the extreme eastern tip of Jeju-do, is a 182-m high crater, shaped like a punch bowl. All Korean visitors feel obliged to get up in the early hours of the morning in order to climb Ilchulbong and catch the sunrise. When I was there, I woke up in time, but it was bitterly cold, cloudy and windy. I'd climbed Hallasan in a blizzard the previous day and was about to go to Udo, so I turned over and went back to sleep again. Anyway, the mountain itself was an impressive enough sight for me.

What's it like to live in Jeju in the past?

by mitchimitch

The Jeju Folk Village Museum is a place where the indigenous lifestyle of the Jeju inhabitants in thepast has been viewed over the vast area of 157,100 square meters. It was designed to revive one of the island scenes during the nineteenth century. The museum includes traditional rural villages, such as: a mountain village, a hill-country village, a fishing village, and a shaman village. Inaddition, it has preserved the old local government offices of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910),which includes: the office of the administrator and prison cells for those who were exiled. Thereare also houses in and around the Folk Village that are either original or rebuilt in the original form. Most of the buildings have been relocated from their original locations. This was a part of an effort to preserve the cultures, such as folk songs, legends, and language (dialects), in addition to the...

Green tea...

by mitchimitch

O'Sulloc Cha Museum which opened in September 2001, is located at the entrance of the green tea farm of Seogwangdawon. It is an exhibition hall for a wide variety of teas as well as the tea-drinking culture. It offers details on the chronology of Korea's tea culture, the production process, various uses of tea and its many types and species. The precious teacups from Asia and Europe are especially an eye-catcher. The O'Sulloc garden contains faunas native to Jeju, including frog flounders and forest bowers, among others. The viewing terrace on the 2nd and 3rd floor offers a splendid and breathtaking view of the largest green tea farm in Korea set against Mt. Hallasan. Loveland - Hallim Park - Halla-san etc

by Ewar41

'Loveland' a sexual statue theme park. This is a place everyone visiting Jeju-do should go to. It will bring a smile to eveyone's faces with statues and exhibits that raise an eye brow. Koreans are not known for their sexual expressions and are known as highly conservative (think again).'Hallim Park' is a very refreshing set of gardens and bird life zoo. There are two long lava conduits that are open to the public to explore and a bird zoo that has some interesting birds to view. There are even Ostrich there! There are a few lakes to walk around and a large artifical water fall to view, and get wet by. Hallim has a number of statues of naked women and lots of old Vocanic rocks to pose by. It also has a garden filled with Bonzai trees, some of them are above 100 hundred years old. 'Halla-san' is the dorment volcano that sits in the centre of Jeju-do. Although there are several others...

Jeju Stone Park

by TheTravelSlut

The new (opened summer of 2006) Jeju Stone Park is both a mix of indoor and outdoor museum and exhibits and considers itself an ecology park displaying some of Jeju's stone culture related to Jeju's formation and the life of its people. The museum highlights some of Jeju's culture and the geology of the island and this part of Asia and is divided into three courses. The first is relatively easy to navigate, see and walk while the second and third require more time and more walking. They consist of This park requires quite a bit of walking--some over uneven terrain--and includes a "Sky Pond" which is a flat "pool" that flows over like an infinity pool, mini-restaurant, gift shop, a tiered waterfall, several rest areas, and It is about 35 minutes from Jeju City and about 45 minutes from the Jungmun Resort area and views of Mt. Halla can be seen in the background.Ticket prices are 5,000 won...

A unique museum honoring women divers of Jeju

by TheTravelSlut

The new Jeju Haenyeo Museum honors the generations (perhaps as long as 2,000 years ago), the women divers of Jeju.It is a mix of indoor and outdoor 2-level exhibits right along the ocean and has everything from diaramas to a 15 minute movie, and static displays of a boat/raft, diving equipment, old documents, & photos, life in a fishing village, and observation deck. The museum highlights Jeju culture and focuses on the women that are born into a life of free-diving off the coast of Jeju for abalone, sea grass, and other sealife. Originally there were over 2,000 divers but that has dwindled to less than 200. Amazingly, the average age is 50-60 and some dive into the 70's.This fasinating look at an unusual occupation makes it worth a visit here. It is about 1 hour from Jeju City and about 1.3 hours from the Jungmun Resort area.Ticket prices are 1,200 won (about USD )1.50 and children are...

Jeju-Loveland: A whimsical, artistic look at sex

by TheTravelSlut

I took some time away from the Jungmun resort area and hired a driver for 4 hours (60,000 won or about USD $70) for a 40 minute trip around the west side of the Mt. Halla area to an area just south of Jeju-City and the Jeju International Airport.I had heard about Loveland from a photoblog ( http://gdimension.typepad.com/ ) but never thought I would see and experience it. I am glad I did because it was a creative venture to say the least. After arriving at a non-descript area, flanked by a mini strip mall, and ust past Mysterious Road, my driver directed me to a small ticket booth where I paid Korean Won $7,000 (or USD $8.00).A self guided walking tour of Loveland, which is 90% outdoors, took me about an hour and there were many statues, an art exhibit in a nice (warm) gallery, an art gallery, a two gift stores and a restaurant.Along the path, which has phalluses substituting for arrows...

Seongeup Folk Village

by glazaro

This mountain village lets you freely wander through a living, breathing slice of old Jeju, at least on the surface. Homes of the thatched roof, stone wall mold comprise this interesting section of the island. However, the straw roofs often come with TV antennae and/or satellite dishes, so don't expect to see ancient social conventions to go along with ancient architecture. People are in fact living in the homes, so try not to be too intrusive and just claim to accidentally walk into someone's house. Along with the houses are some old government buildings, an old Confucian school, and other remnants, as this area seated the capital of Jeju at one point. And, as on other parts of the island, you'll notice many of the stone statues (replicas?) called "dolhareubang", which were used as guardians at the gates of castles. Take a stroll around the area, wonder aloud at what it would be like to...
