    Nami Island

by jckim Written Nov 18, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Located in the middle of the North Han River, Nami Island is a riverine island that only became completely separated from the mainland in July 1943 with the completion of the Cheongpyeong Dam. The island is situated on the border between two of South Korea’s northern provinces, Gyeonggi-do (where the main access road and parking lot are located) and Gangwon-do (of which the island is administratively a part of).

The half-moon shaped island is 4 kilometers in diameter and approximately 400,000 square meters in size. It boasts wide open grassy areas suitable for picnics and recreation surrounded by chestnut and popular trees. For Koreans and international visitors the island is an oasis suitable for leisurely strolls or romantic dates. The name of the island derives from the fact that it is home to the tomb of General Nami (1441-1469), who was appointed minister of the Military Board at age 25 after suppressing Lee Shi-ae’s Revolt during the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty but was later branded a traitor and executed at the age of 28.

Since 1967 the island has been developed as an integrated recreation area and in fact the entire island is natural playground floating on the tranquil waters of the lake created by the dam. As the island is located only 90 minutes from Seoul, over the years it has been used as an off-site training facility for college students and businesses and as a recreation spot for day trippers, family getaways and site for seminars or outdoor field study. Beginning in the 1980s Nami Island became a favorite location for the filming of movies (Choi In-ho’s “Winterreise”) and in 2003 rose to international prominence with the re-broadcast of the Korean television series “Winter Sonata” throughout Asia.

Facilities that have served to support these cultural efforts including the UNICEF Hall, YWCA Lipia Garden, Andersen Hall, Nami Cultural Center, the Hands-on Learning Center, the Song Museum, the Artists’ Retreat, recycling center, Gallery Nami, and Bonsai Garden. Currently Nami Island is moving beyond the concept of recreation/retreat site to that of a more comprehensive setting for cultural projects, international events, and the arts all held with a consciousness of the natural environment.
Averaging 2,300,000 visitors every year, Nami Island declared its cultural independence and became “Naminara Republic,” focused on environmentally-friendly activities and supporting arts and culture. The republic is a place where nature and human beings live peacefully in harmony

    Nami Island 1

by machomikemd Updated Apr 4, 2011

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Nami Island was named for the famous korean general and youngest defense minister, General Nami who died in the 1500 but it now became more famous due to it's romantic pine trees and biking trails and is the Main Setting of Winter Sonata, which started the Hallyu or korean Wave throughout the World!. (Again See My Videos!). it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the very center of the island, where all the major restaurants and shops are located. All the key roads converge on the central square, where traces of "Winter Sonata" are still visible (well, there is still a poster where Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo embrace each other) as you can see in my pictures hehehe.

A 5 minute ferry ride from the gapyeong wharf (included in the ticket) starts the adventure.

Admission: Adults: 5,000 won, Youths: 3,500 won, Children: 2,500 won
Hours: 08:00 ~ 21:00 (Open throughout the year)

Like in nearby nami island, this hip street of Chuncheon City became more popular due to the "Winter Sonata" since this street is the setting where the lead characters shop and eat the famous gangwon province specialty, the Dak Galbi (Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings). This popular street is in the heart of downtown Chuncheon and Fast-food restaurants, movie theaters, nightclubs, and more pack the streets of this hip and trendy area. The street was originally known as Joyang-dong Street. The current name, Myeong-dong Street, comes from Seoul’s hippest shopping district, Myeong-dong. The famous food street, with many tasty Dak galbi restaurants is located right behind this shopping street. (Again see my videos!)

Nami Island 2 (Winter Sonata Setting)

by machomikemd Updated Jul 25, 2008

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is the main setting of the highly acclaimed Winter Sonata, which started the Hallyu (korean wave of television dramas that became popular in asia and North America) that is why you see that tourist here are mostly asian with just a few caucasians.

Due to this, General Nami (whose Exploits earned him the name of the island in the 1500's) was overshadowed hence nami island is more known as Winter Sonata Country!

    Climbing Bongwisan

    by skootter01 Written Oct 12, 2006

Bongwisan is a tiny mountain located right behind the provincial office in Chuncheon. To get there, simply follow the street signs leading to the provincial office. Next, face the office gate and turn right. There is a small road/alley that leads to the trailhead and on up to the mountain.

There is not much to see at the top, except some radio towers and a few peek-a-boo views through the trees. But it makes for a nice day trip and a little exercise. You can also come down on the other side and see a quaint little temple before heading back to town.

    Climbing Samaksan

    by skootter01 Written Oct 10, 2006

Samak mountain (654 meters) is a very strenuous hike with some very good views of Chuncheon as well as the river running below. One side is about 2km straight up - ladders, ropes, chains, cables, and hand over hand climbing come into play. But it's not as bad as it sounds. I saw elementary school kids doing the same climb so it's not all that bad.

On the other side, at the bottom of the mountain, is a small waterfall as well as a few little mom and pop shops. This hike is great if you are short on time or just want to spend a few hours out of the city.
