This is one of Korea's finest national parks. The mountains tower over 1,000 meters, and are accessible by the numerous hiking trails. Be forewarned: they are demanding, and only for those fit enough to make the climb. It's not dangerous, but very challenging. Allow at least several hours for a round trip. The name Songnisan means "Remote from the Ordinary World Mountain".

One of Korea's largest and finest Buddhist temples, this one dates back to 533 AD. The invading Japanese burned it down in 1592, but it was rebuilt in 1624 and modified since then. Since my visit, a huge statue of the Buddha was finished. This is a nice place to relax on the way to or from the mountains.

Songni-dong

This small village lies just outside the beautiful Songnisan, or Mt Songni National Park. Next to Seoraksan, this is Korea's most breathtaking mountain scenery.
