Taking the train in Korea is perhaps one of the most relaxing experiences I've had so far in this country. The trains are very comfortable, and fast!
We took the train from Busan to Gyongju. A round trip for 2 people only cost about $25, very cheap! Although the inter-city buses are cheaper, they don't have bathroom facilities, and they aren't quite as fast.
The train has all the basic services provided: bathrooms, air conditioning/heat, snack trolley, etc.

Being a tourist destination, Gyongju has mastered the fine art of making sure people can get to the popular sites quickly and easily. Within the city there are several routes, but if you're visiting local sites, there are two buses you need to know about: the #10 and the #11. These buses run in loops through the major tourists areas of the city (and they go in both directions). Starting at the bus terminals downtown, the buses loop out to Bomun Lake, to Bulguksa Temple, and to some of the lesser known areas. If you're not sure which one to take, there are information booths (with English speaking employees) at the bus and train stations who can direct you. The bus costs just over $1 for one fare.

Take the Subway Line 3 going to Seoul Express Bus Terminal and follow the signs leading to Gyeongbuseon Line. It is quite straight forward but it would be helpful if you ask someone to write the name of the place in Hangul.
Since the Korean names could be quite confusing to foreigners, be sure to get the right ticket....Gwangju and Gyeongju can be interchanged easily. You may end up in the wrong part of Korea!
