The whaling industry is officially banned, but that does not mean that it does not still exist. Koreans very much like the taste of whale meat and use the oils for various things. Therefore, just the same as the dog markets, there are a few whale meat vendors lurking in the background.
This photo is not actually of a whale carcass, but that of a dogfish. A dog fish is a huge, ugly fish whose skin and fat closely resembles that of a whale's. But red flags do not need to be raised just yet.
My friends in Pohang did tell me that whale meat can be found, but only if you know where to look for it. As a warning, just do what you can to be an informed consumer and try not to add popularity to the trend.
