A National Birthday Party

by hindu1936

Buddha's Birthday is not celebrated on a particular date, but is reckoned by some mysterious process of lunar dating that only Asians can grasp. Nonetheless, the day is one of spectacular parades, concerts, and rejoicing. There are hundreds of Buddhist temples in South Korea and each one is painstakingly decorated for the joyous event. One of our favorite places on the birthday is the beautiful Mageok-Sa located about 35 minutes south of Cheonan. Several nationally known movie stars, singers, political figures, athletes, and just about anyone else who can make will be there. Normally just an obscure temple in a rustic setting, on the birthday, well bring your own chair to sit on, and forget parking there. You will have a minimum of a 10 minute walk, and if you a bit late, 30 mintues. The concerts begin at 1:00 p.m. with several musicians using traditional Korean stringed instruments and...

Hwach'on Resevoir (4 photos)

by nicolaitan

For beautiful rugged scenery the Hwach'on Resevoir offers unending vistas. Created by a dam on the Pukhan river near the city of the same name, the resevoir is approximately 12 miles long but narrow throughout. The dam, only 13 miles north of Chuch"on, was controlled by the Chinese Communist forces during the Korean Conflict and the area around the city and resevoir was the scene of intense fighting between North Korean and Chinese soldiers versus South Korean soldiers as well as US Army and Marines. The rugged terrain and vicious weather combined to make this area one of the difficult.

Nonsan City South Korea

by Ladymaggic

Nonsan City must be off the beaten track as I just cannot find it anywhere.Yet, it is a reasonably large city 3 hours from Seoul where many people live. There is an University here, a large shopping centre, a huge reservoir with two large hotels on its shore, many schools, and I am teaching English at the Lap Laboratory, also known as Harvard Institute which is in Chwiarm dong in Nonsan City. There are some beautiful temples and many beautiful churches.I have been searching the web for hotels, at I thought, Daejeon...another place that keeps coming up in the search engines as non existent. Yet I know it is there and I will be attending a wedding there on Sunday. My next writing will tell you heaps more.I would be very interested in hearing from someone who has even heard of Nonsan. My travel website will tell you more if you wish it.http://Groups.yahoo.com/group/newslinkYou may like to view...

One of the top-5 most beautiful spots in Korea.

by Outbound88

Mount Sorak is a beautiful site and a must for the mountain lover. Mount Sorak's name means "snow rocky mountain". The mountain is over 1500 meters above the sea level. You could easily hike the mountain in the early morning and jump off the side into the ocean before noon. Enjoy!

Beopjusa Temple, Songnisan

by manil51

On Mt. songnisan is one of the largest temples in Korea called Beopjusa Temple. At the temple, there is a Maaeyeoraeuisang carved on a rock. Monk Uisang refers to a sitting Buddha statue, and Maaeyeoraeuisang describes the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower, which is the picture carved on the rock. The years have damaged the picture quite a bit, but the original picture can still be seen clearly. In any picture taken of Beopjusa Temple, one object that always gets included is the Cheongdongmireukbul, which is the largest of its kind in the world. . Beopjusa Temple is the blossoming of a long history of Buddhist culture developed on Mt. Songnisan.

Seoraksan National Park

by ant1606

Right after the park's main gate, you'll find the cable car station on the left side. Take it to enjoy a comprehensive view of the Pacific Ocean and Ulsanbawi rock, which is probably the main natural feature in the park.

Seoraksan National Park

by ant1606

I've climbed Ulsanbawi Rock in December. With perfect weather, temperature was unexpectedly pleasant. The long and steep steel staircase in the last section of the climb, and the outfit of climbers may lead to think of this climb as an easy and effortless one. Staircase goes up partially inside a gulch and around huge granite walls.Do not underestimate this climb. Take your time, dress properly and bring plenty of water.

Inside the park a few Pagodas can be seen. These are generally immersed in quiet places and were used by teachers to impart school lessons to students. Grat places for meditation, Pagodas were ideal places much different from present-day school rooms!

Soraksan National Park

by skullcrusher

If you have the time and energy and you like to hike and climb mountains then I think a trip to Korea's east coast is definitely worth the effort. Sokcho - is a sleepy little resort town on the east coast of S. Korea. It's my favorite spot in the country because it's quiet and is the base for some great mountain treks. It has a nice beach, but the water is a tad chilly for my taste.Soraksan National Park - is very close to Sokcho. It is considered by many Koreans to be the Mecca of mountain climbing and hiking in the South. (I'm told that there are even better mountains in North Korea, unfortunately .....) Soraksan is a hidden wonderland that I can't wait to visit again. If you have the time do go and visit it. But it takes a while to travel overland form Seoul.
