Dog meat..hmmm..tastes a bit like lamb or beef...

by museberry

So yes, it's true that Korean's do in fact eat dog. Now before you begin the "oh yucks" keep in mind that this country went through a major war within the last century that left the population without alternative sources of protein, at which point Fido and Spot made a nice entree at the dinner table. Today it is eaten only in a limited number of establishments as in hosting the Olympics in the 80's many other nations refused to come if they did not close down dog meat restaurants. But if you are so intrepid and wish to seek out this form of dining it's not impossible to find.I came here open minded to the new meat and have in fact dined on a number of other bizarre (by western standards) dishes in my travels thus far. While in the pottery famous town of Icheon my Korean family away from home invited myself and another American for a traditional Joseon Dynasty dinner. We lost count at the...

HAEINSA TEMPLE - TRIPITAKA KOREANA

by manil51

The Temple of Haeinsa, on Mount Kaya, is home to the Tripitaka Koreana, the most complete collection of Buddhist texts, engraved on 80,000 woodblocks between 1237 and 1248. The buildings of Janggyeong Pangeon, which date from the 15th century, were constructed to house the woodblocks, which are also revered as exceptional works of art. As the oldest depository of the Tripitaka, they reveal an astonishing mastery of the invention and implementation of the conservation techniques used to preserve these woodblocks.

Tomb of King Muryong,GONGJU

by manil51

Korea's 25th King (Muryong) and his queen were buried together in this tomb. it was discovered accidentally in 1971 while repairs were being done on the nearby Songsanni Tombs (numbers 5 and 6). Almost 3,000 relics were discovered, one of the best finds showing the social and cultural aspects of the Paekche Kingdom. The tomb, constructed with bricks about 1,500 years ago, is very firm and elaborate. The exhibition hall in front of the tomb houses replicas of the tomb and various relics.

Jusangjolli Rocks, Jeju Island

by manil51

An unusual rock formation created by the erosion from ocean waves and wind. It is as if someone stacked a pile of hexagonal crystals on the seashore. The waves that can reach up to 30m in height crashes against the fortress-like rocks and produce a spectacular scene.

OEDOLGAE (LONELY ROCK), Jeju - du

by manil51

The giant stone pillar, standing on the sea front of Sammebong, is about 10m round and 20m in height. The name came from a legend that General Cheoeyeoung disguised the rock to appear like a giant military general to scare off Mongolian soldiers who were holding Beomsum islet. The enemy soldiers were so terrified that they all committed suicide. There are many mystical rocks around it and beautiful islands such as Beomseom, Saeseom and so forth. The sunset on Beomseom from Oedolgae is truly a majestic scene.
