(general): vegetarian food

by Ianchen

Being a vegetarian in south korea is pretty tough, and even tougher if you don't speak korean. A safe bet for vegetarians is Bibimbap which can be ordered without meat. If you order, you should not only ask for no meat, but also add "without seafood, i.e. crab, fish, mussels, squid... and without ham". Very often meat is used for the broth of for example kimchi-jigae. Kimchi-jeon usually is okay, too. But note that Kimchi is actually not vegetarian since it is prepared with a paste made of fermented fish!!

..: Sea weed Soup,MiYukGook

by bryankang

Mi Yuk Gook is very common ,light soupand it has mild taste from Mi Yuk ( sea weed ), meshed garlic, some chopped beef, and sesami oil, salt and soysauce. Some moms cook without beef, to make a clean taste, also instead of chopped beef, chicken or sea mussel, abalone shell is replaced to this.Among them, Mi Yuk Gook with Abalone shell ( Jeonbok miyukgook ) is the highly regarded one.( Actually I haven't have Jeonbok miyukgook yet, because my mon didn't need to buy abalone for this soup but my wife cook Miyukgook with sea mussel named Honghap Miyukgook very well.)And in restaurants we koreans regard it as a plain soup servedfor free regardless of soup bowls, especially main dish is red colored wih pepper waitresses serve you as manytime as you want!In Myungdong area, I think you could order good Miyukgook in Japanese Stylerestauant, because in korea Japanes restarant is qualified as for...

Any restuarant serving Korean BBQ: Korean BBQ

by Edith49

These restuarants are all over and usually you have to wait for a table, they are very popular. Each table has a grill built into the table. My son introduced me to this type of Korean food. What we had was wine samgyupsal. Each table has a built in grill. The waitperson will bring meat to cook on the grill once it is fired up. Once it starts cooking, it is cut into bite-sized pieces. We also had onions and mushrooms on our grill. Then they bring all the condiments (tofu, kim chi, garlic, sprouts, etc.) and the lettuce leaves. As soon as the meat is cooked thoroughly, you load the lettuce leaf with meat and condiments, wrap it all up, pop it in your mouth and eat. Yummy! I love it - it is my favorite Korean dish. I sort of skip the Kim Chi, tho!

Nak-ji (Small Octopus)

by ant1606

The freshness of food is much appreciated worldwide, and eating live animals such "nak-ji", local word for octopus, is definitely a guarantee.Three- or four-inch long "baby octopus" come alive in a bowl from which they crawl out, to be quickly caught and eaten alive as a whole. Some of these hold a desperate grab on the cheeks and lips before being chewed. Another dish is a larger size of live octopus that also comes in a bowl. These are brought in but the difference here is that the waitress quickly chops them with scissors in bite-size chunks that keep moving for several minutes.I feared that the suckers could hold in the throat causing choke. Upon my question to local colleagues, they said it can happen and they are aware of this causing a few reported deaths. That was my final decision for not tasting this delicacy as a raw dish....instead I've put several chunks into my sizzling pot...

Pupa (Silk Worms)

by ant1606

Silk is made by unspooling the silk thread from the cocoons after boiling them, that is killing the silkworm before it pierces through its own cocoon. As a by-product the boiled silkworms become crispy food with a tangy sweet flavor, further cooked in a broth with other ingredients. To be honest, it smells terrible and so is the taste. I'm normally prone to taste everything, but I tried it once and didn't give a second chance. Along with sea-cucumber, this is probably the only Korean food I better stay away from, while everything else is just fantastic.Canned pupa are available on supermarket shelves for those who can't leave Korea without or want to share with friends back home.

--: Pick your own fish

by DSwede

Korean sushi and sashimi is with no doubt, all about being fresh. There are numerous restaurants that have tanks and aquariums out front with their main entres still swimming about. You can walk up and down the tanks, viewing the health and freshness of the fish. Then you can point to the ones you want or let the restaurant make a mix platter. Some fishing market areas will cater to people who bring their own fish. What I mean to say is that you can walk through the fish market, select your dinner, and bring it to the restaurant. The establishment will prepare it for you, with only a cover charge for the table and drinks. Stay away from any fish that the scales look infected or bruised.Stay away from any fish that have cloudy/milky looking eyes.

--: Korean sashimi

by DSwede

Korean sashimi is not always prepared like the Japanese sashimi that we know. Koreans love to know that their food is fresh, which means that sometimes it is still alive when it comes to your table. Some of the restaurants will cut and fillet the fish of your choice and make a nice platter for you to eat from.Still other restaurants, will simply slice the fish and put it on the plate. It can be difficult for some westerners to eat this way, because as you pull off the piece the fish's eye or gills may still be moving.Either way, Korean sashimi is not always filleted the same as Japanese style. Japanese will not serve sashimi that is not perfectly cut and bone free. Korean sashimi will often have the bones still in it, giving them the texture they love. Any thing that at one time lived in the ocean is fair game for Koreans to eat. I've had live octopus tentacles, sea cucumber soup,...
