    The big busy city

    South Korea Flag

Favorite thing: Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is set on the Han River that runs across the central part of the Korean Peninsula. A modern, bustling city, Seoul still retains many glimpses of its ancient past in the form of royal palaces, museums, pagodas and traces of the ancient walls.

Served by Incheon International Airport, 62 kilometers from the city, and Gimpo Domestic Airport, just 25 kilometers away, Seoul is encircled by mountains with Namsan (South Mountain) in the centre. The city is dotted with relaxing parks, including the nation's largest park complex, Seoul Grand Park, which contains Seoul Zoo, Seoul Land Amusement Park and the botanical garden. Seoul Tower, which soars above the densely clustered pine trees on the summit of Namsan, is located in Namsan Park and houses the Aquarium and Ocean Life Museum.

Seoul's museums reflect Korean culture, both traditional and modern, and many of them are in the central district of Jung-gu. Namdaemun (South Gate) market is a bustling market place with rows of stalls that sell virtually everything while Itaewon is a renowned shopping and entertainment area. For more upmarket shopping, Apgujung-dong is the area to find the world's top fashion houses, fine restaurants and entertainment centers.

    Seoul Cinema Town

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The nearby Picadilly and … theaters were closed so this one was packed the couple of times I went by. It is so cheap to see movies here (remember I am coming from Japan)!! There is also assigned seating. Walking from JongRo3 station lots of older ladies will be screaming at the people walking by. Don’t be alarmed, they aren’t angry they are just scalpers. Scalpers for the movies – only in Korea!!.

    Nanta Theater

    by Jun_Oh Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: Called 'Cookin'' in English, the nonverbal performance had become so popular that a 'Nanta'-only theater has opened July 1 to meet demand. Located near Toksugung Palace in central Seoul, the 300-seat Nanta Theater show the ambitious project all year round. 'Nanta,' dramatizes Korea's traditional percussion performance 'samulnori,' which uses drums and gongs to produce distinctive beats and rhythms. Instead of these traditional musical instruments, which originated in rural agricultural culture, 'Nanta' performers use anything lying around the kitchen, such as brooms, knives, trash cans and mops, to create their own brand of samulnori. This must-see performance, which debuted in 1997, has attracted over 350,000 viewers worldwide, becoming the nation's longest-running show.

    Seoul Tower

    by Jun_Oh Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: 'Vision 360¡£',Brilliant and Great Panorama

Seoul Tower is one of the must see places to visit in Seoul. It is located on top of Mount Namsan, and it's 237m tall. If you buy a ticket at the tower you can also visit other places such as the underground aquarium. It's quite a view from the tower overlooking Seoul especially at night. When the weather is good you can see as far as Inch'on. Furthermore, you can have a pleasant time dining at the revolving restaurant with a spectacular view of the city. Taking the cable car to come down from the tower will be a wonderful experience. If you have extra time, visit Palgakjong and Ponsudae located close to the tower. Ponsudae used to be a place to warn people of invading enemies using smoke signals. A special event is held on January 1st every year and gives you an opportunity to see traditional Korean games such as kite flying

  • Culture takes Flight

Culture takes Flight Performance at Incheon Airpor

Favorite thing: I would definitely take them to the Jong-ro district. The center of the city has many exciting places, restaurants, cafes, fashion stores. They can buy a lots of stylish clothes and accessories at fairly cheap price.

Fondest memory: I had a chance to visit Incheon Airport in Korea, one of the most advanced and attractive airports in the world, recently during my business trip. The first impression I got when I stepped in was a very clean and well-organized layouts. All the facilities and stores around were easily noticed and the signages were well positioned to guide people in the building. In addition to the outstanding structures in hardware standpoints, they also give excellent cultural events regularly inside of the airport at free of charge to visitors. When I was there, they showed some kind of Chinese acrobat performance on the open stage centred 1st floor of the building. Many people were enjoying the show with big applause and it seems they never got bored waiting for their flights or someone arriving. The event schedule let me know that almost every week they are having a couple of such good events, not just one time in a certain period of time. I really enjoyed the show and had a pleasant experience. The photo I uploaded here is one of the recent performances they give. I really recommend you check the event schedule and watch it if you have an opportunity of visiting Korea soon.

    No rae bang

    by ani10881 Updated Nov 30, 2004
Oma(mom) and emo(aunt) doing their thing.

Favorite thing: The Koreans are big on going to the no rae bang (singing room) for a bit of karaoke.

You can bang on a tambourine, whilst imbibing some soju and sing off-key to tunes in Korean, English, and most likely other Asian languages.

Or you can do as my mom did, and buy a karaoke machine. If you want to torture your family, you may want to consider this route.
