Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Our Place - Itaewon
Our Place is a nice, usually quiet, bar on the 5th and 6th floors of the building on the corner opposite Helios in central Itaewon. The 6th floor bar is half indoors and half outdoors and has a great view over Itaewon and Hooker Hill. Just be careful running the gauntlet of "juicy girls" as you enter the building as the basement and 2nd floors both have risque entertainment establishments!

I have been to a few parties on the large outdoor area of the floor. What a great spot in the summer!

The owner is supposed to be Korean actor Hong Suk Chun, the first big name Korean to publicly announce his homosexuality.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Platinum Microbrewery - Gangnam
Platinum Microbrewery has two locations in Seoul: Gangnam Station and Apgujeong. We visited the Gangnam location. It is a spacious and somewhat fancy place, a little more upscale than your typical American microbrewery, but the beer was tasty. They advertised 7 varieties on tap: Pilsner, Wheat, Belgian White, English Ale, Brown Ale, Platinum, and Cream Stout, however when we were there, they were out of Pilsner and Wheat. One of my friends compared it to McDonald's being out of Big Macs...

Beer is about 7000 Won for a .68 liter glass, and about 5000 Won for the .35 liter glass.

Scarlet is a nice large bar in the center of Hannam-dong's small nightlife area just northwest of the Hannam Bridge. It has a huge bar that seats around 25 people. The windows open in the summer, letting the nice cool air in. This is probably the best spot in Hannam-dong.

Seoul Pub is a popular spot on Itaewon's main road. It is a casual American style bar with friendly owner and staff. If you're in for a real treat ask Mr. Jung if you can join the "Seoul Pub Boot Club." They also have good food, darts and pool. This is one of the oldest bars in Itaewon, so it's well-worn but very casual and comfortable.

BTW, the Boot Club is a drinking/betting game where several people pass a giant glass boot of beer around and take sips, swigs, or gulps, and if they feel really lucky, they chug the whole thing. He who finishes the beer wins. Lots of strategy involved as you don't want to try to chug too soon and leave the next guy with an easy victory. But to encourage you to chug, Mr Jung might make a few side bets with you. Keeps the game interesting.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): The Loft - Itaewon
The Loft is one of the old standbys in Itaewon. Good beer and occasional live music. Just avoid Saturday nights when they have hip-hop night... The bar is slightly run down, and the bathroom just plain old sucks, but many people call this place home for the evening, every evening. The local chapter of the Hash House Harriers used to spend a lot of time here until Scrooge's opened...now I think they divide their time between the two.

The Loft is on the second floor with a few tables overlooking Itaewon's main drag. In the center of the large main area is a big oval shaped bar, perfect for mingling around without getting boxed in.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Happy Hongdae
Itaewon used to be pretty much the only place in Seoul where you could go drinking AND dancing (most Korean-style nightclubs have outrageously high cover charges and a pretty lame dance floor), but the Honggik university area (known as "Hongdae" has emerged as the newest and perhaps best place to get drunk and cut a rug. The problem is, it's kind of hard to find the good spots. Your best bet is just to go and wander the streets until you find a crowd of cool-looking foreigners (won't take long, I assure you) and ask them where they're going.
Route 66 has great music and is a perfect place to start out (no dancing, lots of foreigners, and relatively easy to find).
HodgePodge (or "HodgeePodgee" as the Koreans say) is a basement dance bar with good music and a fun atmosphere and - miracle of miracles!! - about an even mix of Korean students and foreigners.

Absolutely everything goes, but Hongdae is definitely NOT as wild as Itaewon, especially when it comes to fashion.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): JJ Mahoney's - Itaewon
JJ's is the most popular -- and high class -- hangout in Itaewon. It is located at the Hyatt Hotel at the foot of Namsan and has a spectacular view across Itaewon and the Han River. Though quiet during the day, at night this place is packed with people -- despite the exorbitant drink charges (13,000 Won for a cheap beer!).

This place is a little more dressy than most, and the cost of drinks keeps the riff-raff out. Be warned...many of Itaewon's "working girls" come here to scope out new high-roller clients to come to their bars and blow tons of money on even more expensive drinks.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Wild Itaewon
There's no where quite like Itaewon for tying one on. Expect to stay out drinking and dancing all night (and I do mean all night: bars close down around 6am). Lots of teachers and American soldiers, but very few Koreans. Those you do meet here will be open-minded and will speak English extremely well.

    Itaewon has 3 parts:
1 - the main drag. The main street (where buses and subways disgorge their passengers) is lined with shops and restaurants.
2 - hooker hill. Where you'll find the hookers and most of the good drinking/dancing spots. At the very top is the clean and affordable "Hilltop Hotel". To get there, go up the Burger King hill and turn left up the hill just past "King Club". You'll see signs for clubs like "Polly's Kettle" and "Spacesomethingorother"
3 - homo hill. Where you'll find some outrageous dance clubs, mainly for gay and lesbians. To get there, go up the Burger King hill, past the turn for hooker hill, and take a left. You'll signs for clubs like "Queen" and "Why Not".

Warning: Itaewon is the ONLY place in Korea where I don't feel 100% safe. Use the buddy system.

Absolutely everything (and almost nothing) goes.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): hong-dae has a cool club...
hong-dae has a cool club called 'drug' for punk- that is where the korean band crying nut started. and for techno, trance and ambient, try M.I. in hongdae. also N.B. for hip hop and rap- actually lots of african americans hang out there. lots of exchange students hang out near hongdae.
probably the only place in korea to find this type of music
