    The Great East Gate

by shavy Written Mar 21, 2015

Dongdaemun is known for its shopping area, a place for a cheap clothing items in Korea. But actually means Great East Gate. This is more commonly called Dongdaemun Gate, first built in 1398. This was the eastern gate in the walls that surrounded the city during the Joseon Dynasty, just like the Namdaemun gate was the southern entrance. This gate is located in a traffic heavy area but is considered quite beautiful

The outer wall at Dongdaemun differentiates it from the other city gates. This served the practical purpose of defending the low lying places at Seoul from any invaders. This gate was damaged during the Korean War, the gate which dates from 1869, has since been repaired. Intricately carved and decorated. And now is one of city's attraction

Dongdaemun, originally called Heunginjimun (literally "Gate of Rising Benevolence"), is one of the eight gates of the city of Seoul. Heunginjimun was constructed during the fifth year of King Taejo's reign, 1398. It was renovated in 1453, and the current gate was built in 1869. Despite repairs in 1998, the roof was damaged by heavy rains in 2011.

Dongdaemun is closed tot he public, but the area is home to the massive Dongdaemun Market that features some 26 malls, with 30,000 vendors and 50,000 manufacturers.

While taking a walk along the Dongdaemum district, I saw this structure that looks like a palace... so I took a picture. Eventually, after reviewing the map, I found out that this is the major eastern gate that surrounds Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. It’s more commonly called Dongdaemum than Heunginjimun, (maybe because Dongdaemum is easier to pronounce) being the prominent landmark in Seoul which means “Great East Gate”. It’s amazing that it’s just regarded as a major eastern gate but really, for me, looked like a palace. (yeah, I really can't believe that it's just a gate!)

After taking a picture, you can go ahead and head for shopping since the area is surrounded by shopping malls, markets, stalls, etc.…

For fashionable clothes, head to Doota Mall or Migliore. usually, the shopping malls are open until midnight.

Originally called Heung-injimun ("Gate of Uplifting Mercy"), it once served as the main eastern gate in the wall surrounding Seoul. First built in 1397, it was rebuilt in 1869 in its present form. The Korean name "Dongdaemun" means "Great East Gate," and it was so named because it was the major eastern gate in the wall that surrounded Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty.

    Dongdaemun or Heunginjimun

by jckim Written Mar 17, 2008

The Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) has built fortresses and gates that surround Seoul to protect the city and Heunginjimun is one of them, located in the West. Widely known as Dongdaemun and built in 1398, it was repaired in 1453, and renovated in 1869 by King Gojong to its present form. Detailed decorations that are very weak and thin represent well the post-Joseon style of architecture. Another point where you can see the representation of Joseon dynasty style is ornamentation in pavilion. This gate has an outer wall which was used to defend the gate in battle and it is the 1st national treasure of Korea along with Sungnyemun.

Here is one of the centers of life in Seoul, the bustling market district around the East Gate, or Tongdaemun. Different sections have different merchandise--everything from clothes to electronics to housewares to you-name-it. These stores stay open almost all the time, so something is always going on here.

    Also spelled Dongdaemun.

The original east gate for the walled city of Seoul was the Gate of Uplifting Mercy (coming in from our rural abode in Kangwando province, it centainly was merciful to us).The current structure dates from 1869. On top of the arch-shaped gate is a gatehouse. A circular surrounding wall protects against flooding. Today the gate is best known for being adjacent the huge East Gate Market with thousands of vendors.

Dongdaemun (East City Gate) and Namdaemun (South City Gate). These two structurally similar gates are the ancient gates of Seoul and they are very impressive monuments. You can't miss them when you are at the Dongdaemun and Namdaemun areas (they are not exactly very near to each other).

Dongdaemun Gate, Originally called Heung-injimun ("Gate of Uplifting Mercy") used to served as the main eastern gate in the wall surrounding Seoul. First built in 1397. The present Dong-daemun Gate was completely rebuilt when Daewongun (father of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty) was in power (in 1863). The present gate is slightly larger than the original one. The architectural structure is similar to that of Namdaemun Gate. But Dongdaemun, which was constructed in the late era the Joseon Dynasty, is excessively detailed.

Dongdaemun is distinguished from other gates by a half-moon outer baffle wall, built in a semicircle to entrap enemies who tried to enter the gate. The base is a granite structure with a single arch, above which is wooden superstructure in the form of a two-storied pavilion, five-gan (a measure of the distance between two pillars) wide and two-gan deep, with a hipped roof. There is much ornamentation in the pavilion design, displaying the skill of the Joseon Dynasty-era artisans. The tongue-shaped ornamentation atop the columns is typical of the wooden architecture of the late Joseon period.

Located nearby are Dongdaemun Market (one of Korea's largest and most popular) and Dongdaemun Sports Stadium.

    Dongdaemun Markets (East Gate Market)

Dongdaemun Market presents all kinds of goods ranging from small accessories to shoes and men's and women's wear at discounts of up to 20~30%. Since most stores are open all night long, the area is bustling with shoppers who cannot sleep at night. As the area is one of the most jammed areas in Seoul, using public transportation, bus or subway is recommended. Shopkeepers of larger shopping centers can communicate in English or Japanese.
