New monument at the Korean War Memorial by Ewingjr98 The large museum and monument of the Korean War Memorial (전쟁기Dž92;관) are dedicated to those who died in defense of democracy during the 1950-1953 Korean War. There are hundreds of aircraft, vehicles, and guns used by both North and South Korea during and since the War. Inside the museum are exhibits with some 13,000 items covering the history of war in Korea. The large wings of the museum house tablets that list the names of 300,000 allied dead from all 22 nations that participated in the Korean War as part of the United Nations Command. The facility was completed in December 1993 and opened in June 1994, as the largest war monument in the world. Also outside are numerous statues and works of art such as the Statue of Brothers symbolizing the divide between the north and the south Leave a Comment

The main exhibition hall of the War Memorial by kdoc13 To borrow a line from the movie "Hot Shots 2" War, it's fan-tastic! Actually, it isn't. But the war stuff can be cool to view. The War memorial of Korea is a museum with all kinds of war toys to look at. Everything from Korean Turtle boats which sank the Japanese Navy under Admiral Yi back in the 1500's to the Korean war and expeditionary missions of today. There are a lot of exhibits which show you just how brutal and ugly the Korean war got, and probably why it should never happen again. Surprisingly though, the museum is not openly anti-North Korean. It has a neutrality to it that is unexpected. It is walking distance from the evil that is Itaewon, and easily accessable from the subways. The website says exit 12, but that is on the wrong side of the street. Go down the block or look for the big statues.Website: http://www.warmemo.co.kr/

Located immediately next to (and I guess appropriately) to Yongsan Army Garrison is the Korean War Memorial. If you are intereted in military museums and war memrobilia, this is a must see site in Seoul. According to it's press, it is the largest museum of it's type in the world. This place rivals the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Being somewhat of a history buff myself, I found this place quite impressive with it's very detailed coverage, displays and diaramas or Korea's War history. Don't expect to just see things on the actual Korean War, but there are exhibits Korea's military develop from before the Chosen Dynasty to Korea's involvement in the Vietnam War. There is also an excellent gift shop. Entrance fee is 3000 won normally, but if you are 65 or older or disabled entrance is free. The War Museum on a rare sunny day by AKtravelers My first expectations of the new War Museum were that it would be focused on the 1950-53 Korean War. Well, it was much more than that. It covers the entire history of warfare on the Korean peninsula. Among the highlights are the replica of the "Turtle ship" -- the first iron clad vessel used in warfare -- that helped Admiral Yi defeat the Japanese invading fleet in the late 16th century. For those more interested in recent military hardware, the outdoor portion of the museum has actual tanks, missiles and airplanes from all the combattants in the Korean War, to include North Korea and the Soviet Union. To fully appreciate the War Memorial, you have to see visit this place yourself. No words or expressions can fully describe the pain and suffering which the Korean people have endured. Imagine fighting your own brother. There are many vintage aircraft, armored vehicles, tanks and other military equipment used in the Korean War. For a war buff, its the closes I can get to the real thing. It was an eye opener. However if you want to shop instead..there is Dondaemun.... The Korean War Memorial is a great treat for history buffs. I visited the place in March 2008 and spent most of the morning there. Aside from the military/war/history stuff which fills up all 3 floors of the memorial (basement pre-Korean War, 1st floor Korean War and 2nd Floor Korean Armed Forces) and the static display on the east grounds of the complex (armor, artillery, tanks, APCs, aircraft, missiles etc.), there is a poignant statue on the main entrance where a South Korean soldier meets and embraces his younger brother in the battlefield. Both are standing on earth that is split, signifying a divided country but not a divided people. The best part? All of these for only 1,000 KRW, the price of a can of soda. Address: Southwest of Namsan MountainDirections: Subway Line 4 or 6 at Samgakji Station. There are posted directions but the general direction is walk east. When you exit the station, walk east and you will not miss the huge memorial on your left. Cross the street to the War Memorial main entrance.

Korean War Memorial by kevarms This massive museum covers the many wars Korea has been involved in up until the Korean War. Outside is a large collection of military vehicles - planes, tanks, even a mini-submarine. This museum is really big and you will need at least half a day to see everything. Entry costs W3,000 Leave a Comment

brother by perseushermes This is a statue made to remind that irony of the war. Two opposing sides were fighting each other until both met in the battlefield and found out they were brothers. How can you kill your own brother ? A really sad reminder of the Korean War For more interesting Seoul tips : "Soul" Tips Leave a Comment Directions: Subway Line 4 or 6 at Samgakji Station.
