Daejeon's metropolitan government tends to make twinning arrangements with sister cities, like Seattle, which are recognised as centres of science and technology in their respective countries.

The twinning leads to joint projects and exchanges between the communities. At the university, where I teach, for example, there are a lot of exchange students from Daejeon's Chinese sister city of Nanjing.
