Learn a little Hongul before...

by JrSkymonkey

Learn a little Hongul before you go and beware taxi drivers that pretend to speak absolutely no english or dont even understand your Korean. Dont take taxis from the Airport or Seoul train station labeled 'AAFES' They charge much higher prices as they cater to unwary American GI's. If you are taking a long trip try to negotiate a cash price before the trip starts. Always negotiate a lower price when shopping. Haggling over price is the Korean way. Check the quality of what you are buying over very well before hand. Dont buy anything the first time in the store. Negotiate the lowest price and then say 'Bee si yo' or Thats too expensive. Walk out giving him a chance to lower the price and then come back later and get what you want at the rock bottom price. Above all have fun shopping in Korea!

Unless you are in the US Army...

Unless you are in the US Army in Korea I would recommend stearing clear of Itaewon (near Yongsan)...especially if you are a woman at night. If you don't mind lots of drunk GI's hanging all over you go right ahead!!!

Those who like to buy clothes with low price may get disappointed at Dongdaemen. It's not so cheap as you might think.Beware of the transportation problem after the shopping late in night, a taxi is very hard to catch especially in the cold winter night.

Folk Museum in Kyongbok Palace...

by Pete_Thera

Folk Museum in Kyongbok Palace Compound - We heard that many organized tours took tourists there. We rather visit temporary national musuem on the other side of the palace and pay 700 won (the huge new national museum is under construction). There's nothing interesting in this Folk Museum. It's a waste of time for us. If you really want to see folk culture, we recommend visiting Folk Village near Suwon and spend half day there. Even this place, we still think, is not worth our time. Everything there is created to attract visitors. We still won't see the real thing. South Korea today is very developed and very urbanized, so the folk culture is vanishing. This is one way they try to preserve it.

The tip comes next but wanted to add a picture of my daughter (on left in her traditional hanbok I brought back on my last trip to Seoul) and Michelle who helps set up the Korean bazaars our adoption agency puts on for adoptive families. This one was held in Traverse City, Michigan at the OURS adoptive family Christmas party. thanks for indulging me! On with the tip!!!Many taxi drivers overcharge or don't turn on their meters...especially at the airport as you come in. You are tired and want to get to your hotel. DON'T go with the men standing in the waiting area. Go outside to the queue line. A uniformed man will get you a taxi. Learn how to say your destination in a respectful way or have someone write it out for you before you go. When leaving your hotel, have a hotel card you can give the driver when you want to get back...just hand it to him. And have the desk clerk write your...

1) Avoid the people trying to give you a lift at the airport! There are just too many scams. Instead go for one of the limo-buses. It cost 10,000 won ($8) to most places downtown.

Watch prices on goods; they may be higher than back home. If you're having clothes made to measure, get local expat recommendations first.
