Transportation in Korea

by budapest8

In the big cities the major forms of transportation are the bus or subway. There are also many taxis in the cities. There are two kinds of taxis, the silver-grey (regular) and the black (deluxe or jumbo). The regular taxis start with their meters at 1,600 won (about US$1.23) while the deluxe start at 4,000 won (about US$3.10). This gives you a certain amount of time. The meter then begins to add for any extra time. The deluxe or jumbo taxis are nicer cars. The only difference I could see was that one cost twice as much as the other, so we avoided using the black taxis.Travel between the cities is by either bus or train. The photo at the left is the Inchon Bus Terminal. As you can see they are quite modern buildings. Some bus terminals in the big cities are older.

Taxis, cheap and reliable

by salisbury3933

In both Seoul and Busan, I found taxis to be a good way to get to places where the metro doesn't, and not especially expensive. The Seoul taxis in particular have an interpretation service attached to them. Normally the driver can speak only Korean, but any instructions you have may be translated to the driver using this service.

KAL Limousine

by ORDflier

If you need a convenient method of getting from Incheon Airport to the major downtown hotels, I would strongly suggest taking the Korean Airlines Limousine Service. The KAL Service available outside of the arrivals hall runs quite frequently and the seats on the busses are very comfortable. Just make sure you don't fall asleep in them after a long flight and miss your stop!

Say YES to white taxies and NO to black taxies!

by Outbound88

Most of the taxies in Seoul are white or black. There are more white than black ones. Unless you're trying to spend extra money, always take the white ones. The black taxies are considered "deluxe" and can be quite expensive. (I learned the hard way!) The drivers usually wear nicer attire but that's about it.

Railroad - KTX

by ant1606

At the beginning of 2005 Korea has launched the KTX, high-speed train built in cooperation with the French TGV manufacturer.Speed exceeds 300 kph (190 mph). Some stretches of railway are still to be updated, anyway KTX is the fastest and most convenient way to move from Seoul to Busan or Kwangju.Several flights are connecting these cities but due to short flight time and hassle moving to the airport makes it definitely not the preferred choice. Also, fog may ground aircrafts at times.KTX has restaurant cars. Economy and business class available at reasonable prices.

Seoul Subway

by ant1606

Best way to move around Seoul and suburbs is by subway and local train system. Network is extensive and well organized with several transfer stations.Tickets can be bought at machines, fares vary and it's necessary to select and input the start and destination stations to obtain the correct fare.Ticket must be inserted at a single-person gate. Remember to take the ticket back as it's later requested to get out at a similar gate. When you leave the subway, ticket won't be given back.Commuters use a magnetic contactless type monthly or yearly pass.

Seoul Traffic

by ant1606

If you can't use the subway and can't avoid surface transportation, expect to stay in a car for long time.Taxi are included because there are only a few dedicated lanes for them, or those lanes are clogged anyway. Good side is that taxi fares are generally affordable.

Driving at Korea

by pieter_jan_v

I drove a mini-van (diesel with auto-gear). It is easy to drive around Korea. In the mountains beware of the many corners; the maximum speed on local roads is 60 km/hr.There are highways across the whole country; some of the are toll roads. Signs are in Bi-langual; Korean/English.Speed checks are posted in English 500 mtr in advance.

Korail KTX train

by macaronald

If you like to visit cities outside Seoul, you can travel by train or airplane. Korail is the Korean railroad company, that has many types of train to travel anywhere. The newest train (as of 2004) is the KTX. It has a top speed of about 300km/h, and is ideally for travelling to Busan and cities between. The train itself is very comfortable, and the train personal offers drinks and food to the passengers for a modest fee. Travelling by train is quite expensive in South Korea, for example: a 2person two-way ticket from Seoul to Busan costs around 100,000 Won.

No Parking Fines in Korea??

by jburron

I've never driven in Korea, but I do remember seeing these stickers on some errant cars. It seems that if you park in the wrong spot or such you don't get a fine in Korea. You do, however, get a big sticker splotched on your windscreen (right on the driver's side!) so that you are (i) branded as a bad-guy and (ii) have to go through what seems like a pretty brutal ordeal to get the thing off of there.I've seen cars with these things on them getting towed, too so don't thing that's where it ends. Thanks to Flo for reminding me of this.
