Tips for Taxies #4

by jburron

Sometimes it seems like foreigners (way-gook-in) are getting the run-around here...and in some cases that is true. Taxies are a case in point. Some complain that their driver seems to be taking them across the city on the most circuitous route possible--in order to get a higher fare. This may be true (I have had rides cost 50% more than normal--mainly because I was drunk and basically asleep and I think the driver wanted some extra cash). But one must remember that Seoul is a complicated city. Some roads have no left turn so he must drive straight then do a u-turn or take a right-right-right combination around the block. Also, sometimes it makes sense to go across the river then back again because of the traffic flows. Keep alert, but at some point we need to trust the driver.

There are two kinds of cabs in Seoul...normal and black. The normal ones are 1,600 won to start and the black ones are 4,000 minimum fare. For the same trip, a black cab costs TWO to THREE TIMES more than a normal one. They are a little larger (I've seen Equus, BMW and Volvo black cabs, but most are Grandeurs) but other than that there is little difference in service, speed, etc.Black cabs are not everywhere, too. Only in certain areas such as outside major hotels, financial/political areas such as Yeouido, Kangnam and some places downtown. They are not allowed to stop elsewhere and wait for fares, but you can flag one down off the street if you like.To the chagrin of some foreigners, black cabs are also in Itaewon and, not knowing the difference in fares, they get pretty pissed when a 10,000 cabride costs 20-30,000--just watch out.

Tip#2: If a cab stops for you don't explain your destination before getting in. Just get in the cab. If you speak English to a cabbie (very few speak the language) they will feel some burden/hassle and, to ease this feeling, simply drive off.Once in the cab say "Anyounghaseo" (hello) and "Ajeoshi" (mister, sir) then your destination "...ai ka-jusaeyo". I also like to (knowing Hangul) read the driver's name (there is a card on the passenger's side dash in every cab). We sometimes talk a bit and (perhaps) he believes I am more a local and know the streets (no overcharging). To get there faster say "koop-hai-yo" or "bal-li ka-***a" (let's go fast).Turn right is "o-roon-jjok" and turn left is "win-jjok" while go straight is "ddokparo ga-jusaeyo". Stop is "yeogi-yo" (polite way to say 'here').

Getting a cab in Seoul is usually quite easy. You go to the curb, wait 3-30 seconds and wave your hand (arm extended, hand pointing down with palm facing you, as if sweeping toward you). There is a little light in the cab as well as on the roof--if it's on then the cab is free. Sometimes, however, there aren't any around. Tip #1: go to a busier street.Cabs are usually around hotels, restaurant districts and financial/poitical areas--especially at night. If you really can't find a taxi call 1588-3382 (normal taxi), 1588-0082 (black cab) or 02-888-2000 (jumbo taxi).More tips to come.

Kid's Play Room at Incheon Airport

by MacPac

When departing Korea fter you've gone through customs, if you have kids and some time there is a play room you should check out. It is near Gate 25. My kids loved it since they had been in the car for a few hours on the ride to the airprot and they were able to jump on the trampolene, play in the enclosure filled 100's of little balls, and play with the kid's computers. There is also little toilets and free water for them too. It is clean and there are places for parents to sit. This is a picture of my kids coloring pictures and playing games on the computers.

tThe Subway / Metro

by JuraidahJ

Buying the ticket wa sthe easy. Changing trains is the difficult part. Be sure where you want to board and alight before buying the ticket. There are several colour codes of the rail. Study them properly or you will get lost like we did! Oh.. check out the entrance and exit too, it can be quite confusing if you dont read Korean. The train station and trains are clean and comfy.

Getting around is very easy, as there are frequent regular busses, which go just everywhere. The busses are quite comfortable. Normally you can just go to the busstation. The busses start as soon as they are full. Busfares are cheap.

Trains and Buses

by D_Shannon

Trains and buses are cheap and convenient in Korea. For less than $20 you can go just about anywhere in the country. Buses can be taken from the huge Gangnam center in Seoul, and trains depart from both Seoul Station and Yeoungdungpo station. Tickets usually only need to be purchased in advance on weekends, and even then standing tickets are always available.

To fly or not to fly...

by D_Shannon

Obviously, since passage through North Korea is forbidden, most travellers must fly into one of Korea's two international airports (Incheon, near Seoul, or Pusan, in the south of the country), but there are slow boats available to and from China and hydrofoils available to and from Japan.
