No Seatbelts!

by jburron

If you get into the back seat of car in Korea chances are you will not be expected to put on a seatbelt. This makes sense, as the traffic does move slowly here and many of the drivers give way and do not roar down the roads as in some places. However, the facts bear a different situation. Statistics from 2000 show that compared to the OECD median rate of Road Traffic Fatalities Korea is incredibly dangerous. For fatalities per 100,000 population they are almost DOUBLE the OECD rate. For fatalities per 10,000 registered vehicles Korea's rate is almost FOUR TIMES that of the OECD. And for fatalities per 100 million vehicle km travelled the rate is THREE TIMES that of the OECD.It may be due to road conditions (and lack of or misuse of safety barriers), the structural integrity of the cars here, the lack of airbags or some other reason, but the lesson is clear: Wear your seatbelt!Also,...

Adjust your order

by jburron

In Korea, especially at non-4 star restaurants, you may want to order your meat a notch up. If you like your steak medium, order it medium well...if rare then order medium rare..if well done tell them very well done. From what I have seen the chefs (even for hamburgers, which, of course, MUST be well done) will take your meat off the grill a little early.

When Strolling around any large Korean City.......

by Hmmmm

Be careful not to get lost. Most cities have a subway system in Korea, but they are very sparse, with only two lines etc. Only Seoul has a very good subway system with many stations.Korean Cities are VERY concentrated, and the architecture si similar. That is many different areas look Identical. If You don't read hangul (Korean Script) it is IMPOSSIBLE to see where you are. It seems silly, but you will be surprised how many foreigners end up in a policesation saying that they are lost. It happens alot.

HUGE, VERY HUGE SPIDERS...

by Hmmmm

Be Careful when You are walking through the forest in Korea. Because these BAD BOYS are everywhere.....Not only are their webs hard to see, and strongs and sticky as all get out. The big Yellow Spiders and Huge.... My friend he heard one growling at him the other day. I waouldn't be surprised.. You have been warned... ^^;;

Negotiating Korean Drivers! Believe It!

by Hmmmm

Seoul Is a Traffic Nightmare. Crossing the street makes the 'Roman Shuffle' look like a waltz. Here you virtually have to sprint across with the other hundred people that will cross with you.So many people are killed on the Streets of Seoul. To handle the sheer volume of traffic on the roads drivers have to be aggresive. Buses are the worst. I have seen people thrown to the floor in a moving bus, as the driver took a gap. cars aren't much better.I would never drive in Seoul, nor would I ride a bike. the traffic due to its volume is very dangerous. For instance, most city arterial roads are 5 lanes each way, 10 lane streets. And they are usually gridlocked.

Guesthouses

by nepalgoods

When you are travelling on a tight budget in South Korea, you have to be prepared to stay in very primitiv guesthouses. They are often used by the local people to have private hour. Or the men of the village play cards in one of the rooms. TVs are normally very loud. The noice of clapping doors, noisy men and loud TVs sometimes drove me crasy.

Forced Feedings

by kenmerk

When out carousing at night in Korea, especially when you are away from the typical tourist areas, you will have to follow the local protocol for bar behavior...This included "Anju" or snacks plates. One cannot simply expect to enter an establishent and just drink a few beers and sing a few songs... You must also order a few of these snack plates, which can be somewhat expensive...The purpose is obviously to jack the bill up a bit. No use fighting, as this is the local custom, just smile and take it...

Soju. Logically, Korea itself...

by genome408

Soju. Logically, Korea itself does not make sense, war torn country a mere few decades ago, under military rule in my own life time, and now a global powerhouse. Getting to my point. Soju = 40 proof, 20%, most liquor = 80 proof, 40%. I'm fine after five shots of tequilla, then why after five shots of soju am I $hitfaced, and sick as hell the next morning. I had to find this out the hard way. Soju doesn't taste as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but the thing is, once you get that sick after of night of soju induced stupor, well, I can't even look at a bottle of Soju."why am I sleeping in the hallway? where's my shirts? WHERE'S MY PANTS?!?!?"

traffic

by jessmorg

The only real danger i saw was making sure that you were not run down by cars or motorcycles. In korea, cars have the right of way... motorcyclists will drive on the sidewalks if they cant get through on the street, or even just for the heck of it.you must get out of the way, it can be very dangerous. defiantely look both ways... 3 times.. before you cross the street

If you can not eat spicy...

by genome408

If you can not eat spicy foods, bring a lot of antiacid. Of course you can opt not to eat spicy foods, but you will be missing out on some of the best foods. Be a sport, live a little. Eat the damn spicy foods and enjoy your meal. Next morning pay with a special condition you get from certain cuisines, BTS. Burning Tonggumong Sensation. I'm sure you can imagine what tonggumong means. Similarly, if you don't drink, drink during your time here. Its part of the culture. Walk into one of those tent things on the street, order some soju and God know what snackems and have a wonderful night chumming it up with everyone there.
