the bride and groom

While Kandy sleeps, we managed to spend a night enjoying a traditional sri lankan wedding. it took place in the ballroom of the hotel suisse where we were staying, and everyone was allowed to watch from the balcony: we enjoyed some intriguing rituals were the bride, groom and family lit a special lamp, we saw real kandyan dancers, listenedto traditional and modernmusic... but most of all admired the wonderful traditional clothes that the women (and the men too) wore at the wedding. It really was an interesting night.

Dress Code: Nothing fancy, since we were onllokers. Things are different if you are invited: everyone was dressed in a really fancy (and traditional) way

Firewalkers

After the Kandy Dance show, we all moved to an outdoor area, next to the theatre. Here we saw impressive firewalking.

I understand in theory why they do not get burnt feet, but I still find it hard to believe firewalking does not hurt!!

Kandy Dancers

In Kandy we went to a Kandy Show. There was drumming, fire eating, plate spinning and Lots of Dancing with each dance telling a different story. It was very good & The evening was finished of with some fire walking.

Which one? THE pub: The pub
Charlie_UK profile photo

There are basically only two pubs in Kandy and the main one is, with inspirational originality, called THE PUB. However it is a fine venue, with a balcony, upstairs bar and a downstairs are with a big screen. Definitely the favourite haunt for the Barmy Army.

Dress Code: none.

Considering it's Sri Lanka's second city there's not much to do after dark in Kandy. 'The Pub' on Dalada Veediya gets busy in the evenings and there's a good atmosphere on the balcony. There's another bar at The Olde Empire just up the road. The main nightclub is Le Garage, held at weekends at Le Kandyan hotel, but this is several kilometres out of town on the road towards Perediniya. You'll need to hire a taxi or tuk-tuk for the night. Alternatively, the streets are very quiet and late evening is a good time for a walk round the lake. Take a bottle of arrack and see if there's anyone interesting about...

A performance of the Kandy Dancers is a must see when you're in Kandy.
The dancers wear special clothing and masks. There are fire-spitters, traditional dancers, kolam-dancers, etc.
The performance takes about 1 hour.

Dress Code: No special dress code.
