The best and cheapest way to get to Matale is to take the intercity train from Colombo to Kandy (Rs.200/- and takes 2 1/2 hours) and then take and intercity air conditioned bus from Kandy to Matale (Rs.25/- and takes 45 mins)

There are regular buses (air con and normal) from Kandy terminating in Matale. The journey takes about an hour and it's a fairly scenic route through the hills. If you're coming from the north, take a bus to Kandy and hop off along the way.

Do not make plans to travel in Matale between 1.00pm and 3.00pm and the roads are full of school traffic. Most of the busses are taken up for the transport of school children.

There is not much in the Matale city inside. Instead you should venture the Aluvihara rock monastery which is 3km north of Matale. A 3 wheeler from Matale costs Rs300 return.

Matale isn't a big city, but going to Dambulle from Kandy you can stop here and to see one the most important Hindu temple in SriLanka. The pic isn't about the biggest one temple in Matale.
