Aluvihare is a rock monestery on the Kandy-Dambulla highway. The monestery was established during the 1st century and situated between rocks.

You can get to the Monestery by a three wheeler which will cost you about Rs.150/- and take you about 15 mins to get there from the Matale Town.

There are regular buses (air con and normal) from Kandy terminating in Matale. The journey takes about an hour and it's a fairly scenic route through the hills. If you're coming from the north, take a bus to Kandy and hop off along the way.

recently i stayed in Matale at the 'Matale Tea Garden' - i enjoyed my stay there and was treated with delicious Sri Lankan food in their restaurant - the welcoming staff also helped me plan day trips in the Matale district
