    Hakgala Botanical Gardens

by mightywease Written Aug 14, 2005
    Hakgala Botanical Gardens

The Hakgala Botanical Gardens – approx. 9.6km from Nuwara Eilya – are much smaller in scale than the Peradeniya Gardens near Kandy and rather mope wild and unkempt. However, those aspects give the gardens a ramshackle charm and we spent a very pleasant couple of hours strolling around looking at the flowers and plants – the gardens are particularly known for their roses - to the accompaniment of the breeze rustling the treetops. There is also a small troop of monkeys keeping a wary eye on you as you wander!

    the factory

The visit turned out to be very interesting -unexpectedly. It was a real crash course in tea production and we were told about the 7 necessary stages to turn tea leaves into drinking tea : picking, semidrying, rolling, drying, cleaning, fermenting and grading (there are different grades). After the visit we were taken to a little bar to sample a "real" old cuppa. And guess where the bar is located? Right after the shop...

    Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya still has a very British feel, as can be seen in the appearance of many of the buildings, in various colonial styles.

As you travel about the Hill Country through narrow valleys hemmed in by high mountains you'll see many waterfalls. They look pretty spectacular as they just appear out of the lush green vegetation.
