just a note first ... There is not metro station in the airport... if you want to use the metro, you need to go from the airport to FORT(the main metro station ) then get the train.
Public transport are not recommended at all i Sri Lanka, as they are not very helpful in reaching the places of interest .Moreover, they are extremely PACKED !!
Best to do is to hire a car with a driver ( Tour guide) where you can go anywhere at any point of time.
i hired a car ( Toyota new car with AC) from (( CityTours.lk 0094774376538 )) .they are very good and provide excellent service, i paid 36000 Rbs for the following during 5 days
Airport to Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya to Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa to Colombo
Colombo to Airport
also i got some free tours along with the package
the amount i paid was limited to 700 KM ( i.e. 50 Rbs for 1 Km)
The driver was great !! he literally did his very best to make sure i enjoy every minute in my travel, and he took me to lots of places that were not in the itinerary ( Damith 0094772811857 ). I highly recommend this driver if he is available..

We hired a car & driver for a few days, who sorted out all our accommodation & entrances. We gave a list of the places we wanted to visit. He whittled that list down to a realistic size & off we went.
I would definately recommend doing this rather than hiring a car. the driving is crazy here.
The main Columbo to Galle road was built to be a normal 2 way road. It is not unusual to see at least 4 lanes of traffic on it!.

There are buses between Nuwara Eliya and most major towns, particularly Colombo (6 hours), Kandy (4hrs) and Badulla. If you're going by car to/from Colombo the most direct route is the A7 via Avissawella.
There is no train station in Nuwara Eliya. Instead you can catch a train to Nanu Oya about 6kms away. From here you can catch a bus or taxi or, if you arrive in the daytime, walk.

You can possibly take in up to 3 sights or more around Nuwara Eliya with a van.
We visited Pedro Tea Estate, Lover's Leap and Hakgala Gardens in a 4 to 5 hour trip. Expect to pay about Rs1,000 and above for the service.
Enquire around the town centre near the post office or with your hotel.

We took a tuk tuk back to our hotel which was great fun and only cost us 20p which was well worth it for the experience.
