Experiance Sri Lanka to the maximum

by nathicka

You can see everything on Sri Lanka. You can have a nice day at the hot beaches one day and the next day be cold in the brittish weather in Nuwara Eliya. You can see the coconuts groving in the backyard off your hotelgarden and stop your cars to let a wild elephant over the road. You can have a religous experiance in a buddhist tempel or have a wonerful time watching Sri Lankan dancers and having a nice meal in the evening. The peopel are very friendly. And it makes me so happy how 3 religous groups can live in harmony.

The people

by CathL

The Sri Lankans are some of the nicest people I have met. They are friendly, always willing to talk and even when they are trying to get you to buy something they are always polite. The elephants in the orphange will always be one of the most awsome sights I have ever seen.

Cultural Triangle Ticket

by trisanna

If you will be visiting more than one of the cultural triangle sights-you really need the inclusive ticket. It costs around $36 usd. The price has gone up since the tsunami. This ticket covers the following sights:Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Ritigala, Nalanda, and Medirigiriya-plus a few sights in Kandy. The ticket is good for 60 days from date of purchase. It's wise to get this ticket-the normal price for each sight is around $15-20 usd. Unfortunately, no student discounts. Children under 12 can get half price tickets.

Air Quality

by trisanna

Compared to Thailand, Hong Kong, and India, i thought Sri Lanka had very low air pollution. It's encouraging, the government posts their air quality. We did see a similiar version for Kandy Lake, which was very much in the red.

Driving

by trisanna

Roads are quite good in Sri Lanka. There are pot holes in some places, but most are in good condition. Last year, we went to Madras/Chennai India and felt the roads and driving conditions were a hundred times better in Sri Lanka. Also, Sri Lanka is less densely populated than their neighbor, India.

Goats: Sri Lankan Sheep.

by Hmmmm

Goats are ubiquitous. They are in the streets, sleeping under cars, the are garving cricket pitches, standing in flocks on concrete, they are in Colombo they are in the the Central Highlands, they are can even be seen walking along the beach. Every mutton dish in Sri Lanka, isn't mutton (tender Southdown or Merino leg offcuts), no its goat. Sinewy, grissly goat. They are simply everywhere. But why when they aren't as delicious and not as yeilding as Sheep (Mutton)? However apart from providing meat, they also provide milk and act as very efficient garbage desposal units and composters. So it seems that our friend the goat is a pretty hardy and handy chap.

The Ubiquitous Grey Langur.

by Hmmmm

The grey langur, with the midnight-black face (shown here) and the macaque, or the red monkey are seen widespread in Sri Lanka's jungle areas and sometimes even in the small villages. The larger of the two species, the langur, lives in large groups among the trees and is usually not aggressive. Groups of these monkeys are a common sight at some of the Buddhist temples in the dry region, and most often seen begging for give-aways, or if un-successful, stealing, from the unsuspecting visitor. The red monkey, with a brown colored coat and a pink face, is far more aggressive, and quick tempered. This species, if provoked, have known to attack humans occasionally. There are several other species of monkey in the Sri Lanka jungles, but they are confined to the hilly and mostly inaccessible areas and for this reason are not seen by the average visitor to the island. This picture shows a Grey...

SRI LANKAN FACILITIES

by mtncorg

Toilets off the main tourist tracks tend to be the normal ones you find in Asia - a porcelain hole with a couple of 'elephant feet' to either side. The bucket of water is to wash up with afterwards. I have read where these toilets are actually better for the human physiognomy than western toilets and that may be, but of the ones I have seen, too many of the users have missed their aim. Remember to use the bucket afterwards. Don't use your right hand for that is your eating utensil!
