Coconuts, coconuts, Coconuts.

by Hmmmm

My favourite Tree in the world is the Coconut tree. Its beautiful - Curved and delicate, yet strong as an ox. Its supple, and tropical. I maintain, and always will - that the tropics would not be the Tropics without this beautiful tree that decorates tropical beaches with a sense of the sublime. Now all you tropical beach lover's out there know I am right! The sound of the wind through the leaves gives us an accompaniment to the look of the swaying fronds. The grace of a cocnut tree almost makes up for the fact that falling coconuts can be dangerous. They are delicious too aren't they? The Fruit I mean? I remember a marine on duty on the beach calling me over one day. I trudged toward him apprehensive, staring at his automatic rifle. He could kill me with that I was thinking. He asked where I was from. He then turned around and Barked some orders at a teenage boy, who pinned his ears back...

Cultural Triangle Ticket

by bijo69

If you are planning to visit the ancient cities it's well worth buying the Cultural Triangle Ticket. It costs 40US$ and included are the archeological sites in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya (a single ticket is 20US$ each), Nalanda, Medirigiriya, Ritigala and Kandy. You can purchase the ticket at each site.

The capital

by call_me_rhia

Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka, and it's also a metropolitan city with a population of nearly one million. The places of interest are not many, but it's still a pleasant place to spend a day or two... not visiting but treating yourself. If you like food - you're in the right place for some heavenly meals. We spent in Colombo only a short time: the time to have some really glorious meals and some truly boring nightlife. We walked around and visited nice temples, and then we strolled through a wealthy area with security guards everywhere who did not let us take pictures (paranoia rules!). In particular we visited on a Sunday - so we managed to avoid the infamous Colombo traffic. See my local page for more information.

The Old Cities

by call_me_rhia

The area which is called the Old Cities comprehends also the three cities that make up the cultural triangle. It's an large area in the centre, andcentr-north of Sri Lanka... mostly plain grassland with some elephants and zillions of monkeys. I visited three places in this area: the old city of Polonnaruwa, with its ancient hindu and buddhist temples, the rock is Sigiriya with its amazing royal palace right on top, and the Buddha caves of Dambulla: carved into rock and beautifully painted. There would be a fourth highlihgt: Anuradhapura... unfortunately I did not have time to visit this city, too.

Hill country

by call_me_rhia

The hill country area is a green area of rolling hill and mountains which takes in Kandy and the Nuwary Eliya area, just to name the most famous towns. The area is generally covered in tea shrubs and plants: the higher you go, the better the tea is. Unimpressed by Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, although many rave about it. I would rave about the road from which links the two towns: amazing views and delicious tea. And some perfect waterfalls along the way.

Independent

by nepalgoods

Since 1948 Sri Lanka is an independent state. Its first prime minister was Dudley Senanayake. When he was assassinated in 1962 his widows Mrs Bandaranaike followed as prime minister. I think it is quite impressive, that this smal country in the east showed hte Western countries, that it is possible to have a female prime mInister. In Germany we are still waiting for that day.Sri Lanka has still a lot of economic problems. There is also the minority of the Tamils, who are since years fighting for their own state in the North of Sri Lanka. Now sri Lanka is going back to peace - hopefully. It is such a beautiful country with so wonderful and friednly people, that I feel sorry for them, that there had been so much fighting.

British Colony

by nepalgoods

By the end of the 18th and in the beginning of the 19th century the British tried to conquer whole of Sri Lanka, but there were still strong Dutch areas and the Kandy Kingdom. Finally in 1832 the British Govenor Sir Edward Barnes consolidated all under British rule. The British constructed a complete road system, that made it possible to conquer even the most backward rural and jungle areas. The WEalth of the British colonialists was not merchandise like the Dutch but introducing coffee as a plantation crop. But by the end of the 19th century a virulent leaf disease put and end to this. At this time tea-plantantions followed and together with rubber and coconut-plantations this are the most important crops still today. The remnants of the British can mainly still be seen in the center of ths island, where there are still the plantions and where the villages still have some typical timbered...

Domes

by suemac

The dome or dagoba is a usual feature of a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and is made of brick covered in plaster and often painted white. It contains a casket, the garbhagrha, which is used to hold relics and sacred objects. On full moon days (poya) the faithful go to the temples to meditate, read the holy cronicles and give offerings of flowers and gilts. The month of Vesak (May) has a two day celebration as it is the month Buddha was born, recieved enlightenment and died. People send each other Vesak greeting cards.

Buddhist temples

A brief history on Buddhism:-Queen Mahamaya was the mother of Siddhartha Gautama ( Buddha), he was well educated and brought up in a life of luxury. When he was 28 he fathered the successor to the throne. He left home and took his horse Kanthaka and a servant. After crossing the river Anona he left them, cut his hair and wore beggars clothes. He tried to get knowledge of the meaning of life from two holy men but their answers disappointed him. He then tried to find the truth by self-castigation and fasting. After five years he gave up fasting and at 35 decided to follow the " middle way". He regained his strength and went to sit under a bo tree (ficus reigosa, a kind of fig) and vowed he would not get up until he had received enlightenment. While he sat meditating, his former life flashed past him and he understood each new life brings new suffering, the absence of desire brings the end of...
