Monkey business!

by mafi_moya

Monkeys - they're really cute and fun little creatures aren't they? Well that's what I thought too until I came to Sri Lanka! They have to be the messiest and most mischievous animals ever - nothing they like better than ripping rubbish bags to shreds and showering the surrounding area with garbage! When I first moved into my flat just outside Colombo I loved the fact that my back garden led on to a large space of mini-jungle where monkeys leapt across the highest branches of the coconut trees. How exotic, I thought! Of course after a couple of months of them liberally decorating my walls with rubbish and hurling king coconuts through my windows it didn't seem like such a great attraction!A little known fact is monkeys appreciation for lipstick and make-up. A girl I visited a hotel with in Polonnuruwa made the mistake of leaving the room window open for a second. She returned a few...

Making music

by mafi_moya

Sri Lankans love their music and nearly all drinking sessions, long journeys and beach parties end up with guitars or drums being brought out and a good old sing-song getting underway. If there's no instruments then they'll just clap and sing. And everybody sings, no matter how good or bad their voice! Western pop and rock music is increasingly popular to listen to but when the singing starts it's nearly always traditional Sinhalese pop songs. Now I'm one of the few Westerners who can honestly say they actually like Indian Hindi 'Bollywood' music (which is also very popular in SL), but Sinhalese music has a different rythm and beat and it takes a while to get used to. I can't say I've been entirely converted to it yet. It's also a genetic fact that all Sri Lankan males think they can sing and dance like gods. They can't. (Neither can I but at least I admit it). But after a few arracks...

Hot Hot Hot!

by mafi_moya

There's a thin line between bravery and stupidity and I think I might have crossed it! At a local temple celebration one poya (full moon) there were some performers from the temple - dancing, singing and so on. It was about 3am when they reached the climax - firewalking over hot coals. So I watched on with interest as they danced over the charcoal, then got a bit apprehensive when all the men in the audience started to do it as well. Lining up one by one they uttered a quick prayer then ran for their life (or at least their feet) over the burning embers. Then it was my friends' turn and slowly they all did it and it was left to me. Of course not being a Buddhist I didn't "have to" they said, but "maybe I'd like to?" So my machismo and the pride of the whole western world was at stake, and the whole crowd turned to cheer on the foreigner and... I did it. They said it didn't hurt but they...

Yala National Park

by suemac

The park covers a total of 1,572 sq km. Only part of the park is open to the public. You hire a jeep and a tracker (compulsory) to take you through the park. They know the best places to find the animals and as you pass other parties word is spread were there has been any sightings. Animals you may see are elephants, water buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, monkeys, sloth bears, golden jackals, monitor lizards and mongoose. There is a small population of leapards, which you would be lucky to see as they are mostly active at night, same as the porcupine. Of course there are always plenty of birds to see such as peacocks, jungle fowl, hornbills and storks. Between September and May birds from Asia and Europe come to spend the winter including terns, curlews and pintails. 'Ive been to Yala twice and enjoyed both trips. The first in Feb 03 I saw a couple of elephants,...

Stilt fishermen

by suemac

Unawatuna to Weligama , 23 km of coast with beaches and picturque coves. Nice to chill out, not too many tourists. You can swim and snorkle in safety. The stilt fishermen each have their own pole close to the shore. When the tide is right they perch on the poles and cast out their fishing line. The stilt positions are handed down from father to son and are greatly prized. When I visited the tide was out but one of the older fishermen obliged and demonsrated how they fish. He had a couple of photos in his wallet which he proudly showed me of himself and tourists he had met. Of course I took his address and posted him a copy of my photo and gave him some money for his trouble.

Elephant safari

by suemac

Habarana, a small village , centrally placed between the sites of the cultural triangle, offers elephant safari rides. The baskets on the back of those elephants look very high up but are easy to get into as you step into the basket from a platform. The mahout, or elephant keeper, directs the elephant by voice and occasionally gently uses a stick. The elephant I had was a 30 year old female. I rode for a while sat on her shoulders with my feet behind her warm ears. We waded through a small lake, of course at a nice slow pace to take in the scenery. Another boy accompanied us , with my camera, to take photos, and waded into the lake. "Are there any crocodiles?" I asked . "No don't worry I will be OK" he replied" "It's not you I'm worried about, it's my camera!" I replied.

Long train ride......

by Spincat

Take a long slow train journey up into the hills where the tea is grown. The landscape changes from tropical beach, to rice fields with water buffalos, to wild hillsides with waterfalls - and then the tea planatations. Monks, buskers and orange sellers are getting on and off - everyone is friendly, as most tourists seem to travel in air conditioned cars or buses, so your fellow passengers may think you are a bit strange.... Visiting the elephant sanctuary at Pinawalla. We were lucky enough to visit the parents of a friend who live in the beautiful village; they were so kind and welcoming, and an enormous and delicious feast of dishes flavoured with spices from their garden was spread before us: best meal ever! The elephants are wonderful - we saw them bathing in the river; there were some freckled-faced baby elelphants with the herd.

Ohh! Land of coconuts!

by Saagar

Everywhere in the lowlands there will be coconuts for sale along the roads. Excellent as refreshment (juice) and a snack (coconut white). The best is the King Coconut, big and yellow, and they'll chip off the top for you and give you a straw. The other varieties are close seconds. For many it's a bit of an aquired taste, but try it and let the taste dance on your toungue a bit before deciding. This is a safe and healthy drink for the road (but not too much, it's cholesterol heavy). A refined variety is available on bottles, Arak... Probably someone has a VT tip on this?

Sri Pushparama Ancient Temple Monks

by freya_heaven

The small, 4th monk from the back in the photo, seems to be quite a hard nut. All the others either ignored us, or smiled at us, but he just kept scowling. Which made me determined to make him smile. I kept Smiling at him, when ever he looked & scowled over. One time I winked at him & he caved in, It was so sweet he could not stop grinning after that.

Sri Pushparama Ancient Temple

by freya_heaven

Our Tuk Tuk driver took us to his temple one evening. It was a magical experience, just as dusk was falling, the smell of Incense, prayer candles burning, & then to top it off all the young & apprentice monks came out to do their round of prayers stopping at each of the shrines. There were couples throwing coconuts, which were on fire, in to an enclosed area. They believed this would help them concieve!.
